How do you print a list of songs that you have in a folder. I used to do that all the time for the indexes of tunes in a particular folder and run it into Excel so that I could show other things, such as the key, tempo etc.

I should warn that I have my songs in Libraries, Music, BAND-IN-A-BOX FILES, then heaps of subfiles.

This is a vital function for the Index page for all the hardcopy folders we use for BiaB leadsheet/arrangements for all the musicians in all the bands in which I play.

It's probably that I just haven't found the right button.

Not sure if this is it (but works for me): open/click go to song picker (Song -> Song Picker)

Navigate to folder of interest, assuming you have already built/updated list for that folder, at bottom , left of center, of that window and click on "Export as CSV"

Hope this helps?

For a list of songs in any folder, I hit Print Screen, pull up Paint, Control-V and then print. Later, Ray

Can the "Export as CSV" be used for title of song only, without the details of the song? I played around with the filter but got no results. Thanks, Ray

Ray:

Just export the ENTIRE songpicker file as a .csv.
Then open (say) Excel and use File > Open (you will need to change the "file type" to "all files").

When it opens in Excel, it will have ALL the data of course, but it will be separated into columns.

You can either just highlight Col A (the song file name), then copy and paste it to a new spreadsheet, or, delete all the other columns except A.

This works for me using BIAB 2012 (haven't received the new one yet), and Excel 2010.

Let us know if that doesn't work and we can find you a solution.

Good luck!

As already mentioned, going to the SongPicker, navigating to the folder you want, export as CSV is a good way. Using the SongPicker is great because:

1. It will show you both the file name and the song title (and other stuff as well)

2. It will allow you to include sub-folders (huge if your directories are organized).

3. Once you get it into Excel you can delete columns you don't want, and then you can easily sort, or merge with data from other directories (if that's what you want.

Another way, if you are satisfied with only file names, is to get a file manager with a print feature (Windows Explorer won't print directories - but I understand there is a hack to do add this feature). I use a program called FolderPrint Plus (http://www.stgsys.com/print-folders.asp). I see it's $22. Go to the site and check it out. If it's what you want, maybe find something similar but free.

But only the SongPicker route will print the song title for you. That's the way to go IMHO.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies. Since I don't use Excel or Office, the easiest for me would be the print screen method. I just need the titles for a request list on certain gigs. Later, Ray

I'm guessing the free Open Office will do the same as Excel if you're just looking to bypass Microsoft.

Screen captures are great if...

- you don't have to enlarge them very far
- if you can get the whole list in one "shot"

A stand-alone alternative:

I use a Windows Explorer replacement called Total Commander. It's free shareware if you click on the nag screen each time, or $44 US to register for life (I've had mine since 1997). You can print the contents of a folder from Total Commander, with or without sub-directories. It's also a file management utility of great power (with which comes great responsibility smile ).

I like Matt's idea of the standalone app but I'm intrigued by the possibilities of the Song Picker / spreadsheet combination.

Suppose you wanted to find all your songs that had used the same style and similar tempos.

You could use Song Picker to search your entire computer to get the list, then go to the spreadsheet and sort by Column C first, then by Column L. (you can't do multi searches in the Song Picker - at least to my knowledge).

Now I find all the songs using the (say) CHET.STY, sorted by tempo. I can quickly see which songs would "go together" perhaps for dancing.

Some cool ideas in this thread.

I'll second Open Office. It's a free replacement for the entire Office suite. It doesn't work exactly like Word, Excel, Access etc but it's pretty close and it opens up all the different Office files. Anyone familiar with Office will have no problem with Open Office. Sort of like how RB opens up and works with Biab files. RB does most Biab functions but not all.

And what's wrong with just getting a Command prompt, going to the required directory and typing:

>dir *.* /on/s/a-d > MySongsList.txt

(ha ha, just joking, really! But it would work)

Yes, thanks Larry, that is certainly how it used to work but there is no Song Picker as such in 2014. It is now called a Song Button and, not only is it more difficult (well, different, anyway) to find a song but it does not seem to have that old feature whereby you could export the list to CSV or save to the desktop for loading into MS Word or other.

I have to confess I am not adjusting to 2014 very well and it seems much more difficult to use it for my normal mass production of leadsheets and arrangements for all the members of the many bands I play with - in their key of course. I need this function for the indexes of all those folders.

This feature may still be in 2014. It's just that I cannot find it and I am getting behind with the library tasks I have to do over the Christmas break. frown If it isn't there any longer, then I will have to explore some of the other suggestions in this thread. Thanks guys.

It is still great for my daily practice session, of course. I have always said that much of the time Band-in-a-Box swings more than some of the musicians I play with. wink

It is still there - that's how I checked it - in 2014! to tell you

Look on the Left, teh button with the word "song" if you click on the little down arrow under the word "song" you will see one of many options and one is "Song Picker" " and the next screen should look exactly like the old song picker screen - because I think it is identical

OR

using old fashioned menus:

File -> Open Special -> Open Song by Title

OR

Type " Ctrl F3"

they all bring up the "Song Picker"

Hi Larry, It is indeed!

Presently it defaults to my external 'E' Drive, which is where I have my BB program located. But my files are on my main C Drive in Libraries. However, since you are correct in saying that it is the same screen, there is the Folder, Change button down the bottom and it works like a treat - as it always did! And I may be able to make some adjustments in the top half of that button so that it will go to my BB song files automatically.

Problem solved for me!!!!! cool

Thank you so much. grin

If you want the CSV functionality then the Songpicker route is absolutely the way to go.

However, if all that is wanted is a list of file contents then I've been using this little trick for many years and am constantly surprised it is very little known ...

It requires Firefox, though I would think most people have that installed anyway for the many benefits it brings to the browser-stable. If not it is actually worth installing anyway just to be able to do this easily when you want to.

So then ....

With Firefox open, navigate to your folder in Explorer and drag/drop it on to the Firefox window (if you have a Firefox shortcut on your desktop you can just navigate to your desired folder and drag/drop it on to that - even simpler.)

What opens is a list of your folder's contents ... just go File > Print on the Firefox toolbar and print it off.

It gives you names down the left side plus a couple of columns over on the right showing filesize and last-modified date ... no problem to ignore if not needed, though sometimes of interest depending what the list relates to. There may even be a way to omit those, however I've never bothered, they have never been in my way.

A tip: If you are using Windows and have stayed with the standard font/resolution sizes etc you may think the printed text/list is a little on the large size. You can judge this by clicking "Preview" first rather than "Print", which will also show you if the list has lines that are too long for the width of the page and so wrap automatically to the next line.

I've found that using the "Scale" button further along the toolbar and setting it to 70% gives me the size I need for just about any contents list I want to produce, and I have just left it set that way all the time.

It is just a simple contents-print trick, nothing else, nothing fancy.

Karen's Directory Printer is a great free prog with a little more functionality if needed, and I also do the Paint>PrintScreen screenshot thing sometimes but over the years I have found this trick with Firefox is autopilot-simple and in seconds I have a printed list in my hand.

Hope it helps someone whether for playlists or other needs.
