Yes. If you have a reasonably recent version of BIAB, just press F5 at the measure you want the change. You will see each track listed down the middle of the left side of the dialog box. You can use the pull-down choices to select Fade or Louder, or Change By, then specify the amount.

I have set the Change By to increase the loudness but it is not having any effect. I'm using BIAB 2012.5 and trying to change the volume of the piano in chorus 2 or 3. I celect "Change By" and then enter a value such as 10, 30, 50 or more but none of these values result in any increase in loudness during that chorus for that instrument. Does it matter that I'm using a RealTrack?

Should work for RTs. You don't have the track frozen do you?

No, I checked and the track is not frozen. "Un-freeze Piano track" is selected and it indicates "Unfrozen" in brackets next to that selection.

Then it isn't working as it should. Try Opt., Return to Factory Settings and check again.

I Reset to Factory Settings as you suggested. I can now lower the volume, even all of the way to zero using this setting by entering a negative value. But I can't increase the volume with the Change By setting. If I enter a positive value, e.g., 10, 40, even 127, it has no effect on the volume. But if I enter a negative value I can lower the volume and in fact take the volume all of the way down to zero by entering -127. I've tried starting with the volume at different levels from 0 on up and I always get this same response. Positive values do not increase the volume.

By the way, now the chords displayed on my chord sheet are in a much smaller font size and I can't find a way to change that. It's not a big deal but a curious result of resetting to factory settings.

Can you share the file you are working on. It would be faster for us to test it out on our systems rather than setting up our own file to test.

How do I send you an MGU or SGU file? The file manager doesn't seem to allow including that type of file. I assume that's what you would like me to send.

The Public folder of Dropbox is good. Or, if you can identify individuals who will check the file, PM your email address. SGU and MGU files are very small.

I figured out how to make the file available to you. You can download it using this link. Thank you VERY much for your help with this.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1636414/GeeseInBog%20Test.MGU

This is an example. For some odd reason, the melody often doesn't play with the right MIDI patch. I have selected Vibraphone but just now when I was playing this file in BIAB it was playing with a Piano patch. Sometimes when I double click a measure to play it then plays with Vibraphone. It seems to sort of randomly switch between these patches. By the way, I am using a copy of BIAB that I purchased on a hard drive from PG Music and then updated to the latest build, version 2012.5 Build 65.

My hope was someone could "fix" this file and return to Bob. I would be glad to give it a try, however, currently in airport in route to Madrid.

Seems BIAB needs to provide a crash course in BIAB 101 for all new owners (or even long time owners). grin

BOB, This is the workaround that I have always used: If you want to end with a max volume of say 100 for the piano part, then in the mixer, set the piano at that volume. If I want a low piano at intro., I set the piano at change volume -70. At bar 5, I want to increase volume at 15% per bar. The piano will increase accordingly until max volume is reached, or until I change it to maybe -30. Should I want to accent another piano part, I now have the volume in reserve to do so.----Leon

Thanks for this suggestion. I'll give this a try when I get home from work tonight. However, what I would like to do is to start with 0 volume piano, then in chorus 2 increase to perhaps 30% of final volume and then increase to full volume at the beginning of chorus 3. So if I understand correctly I should set the final volume in the mixer and in Chorus 1 bar 1 set the piano volume to Change by -127 to essentially lower it to 0. Then at Chorus 2 Bar 1 I would Change by +30 to raise it somewhat and at Chorus 3 Bar 1 I could Change by another +70 or whatever needed to raise it up to the desired final volume. Is that right? If so, it sounds like the problem is that the volume cannot be raised higher than it's set in the mixer but it can be lowered. This is somewhat contrary to what the manual indicates should work but I can make this work if it behaves consistently in this fashion.

BOB, RealTrack max.volumes are somewhat louder than Midi volumes. So, in the free mgu/sgu songs I use, I will lower the RealTrack volumes, and raise the Midi volumes to compensate. A great feature of 2014 is the overall, volume slider. Now Midi volumes can be raised to bump the view meter into yellow easily, for a better overall mix. You do NOT have to start a track with a setting of-127. In later versions of BB, the mute will silence a track completely. But the raise (+percent) does not work from a mute setting. I should say that it will not work for me, but I wish it would smile. So, if I want to raise the volume of a future bar, say at bar(16), and I have muted the track previously, at bar(8). I will first do a small CHANGE by +5 percent at bar # (12), and then follow with -the volume raise by 20 percent at bar 16. Keeping in mind the max. volume setting for that track. The same things apply when using multiple chorus songs. In a 32 bar song: If a track is muted as it passes from, say-chorus 1 to chorus 2 and you want a volume increase at bar #1 of chorus #2 or 3, then the options are 1=Return To Normal 2=Change By + Percent or 3=Raise Volume By XX Percent. Which gets us back to the original question. So if using #3 ? On the previous chorus, make a small CHANGE BY + X Percent at or near bar #28 of chorus #1. To be followed by RAISE VOLUME BY + percent at Bar # ? of chorus # 2 or 3. Do not forget to select the correct chorus number in the F5 Bar Setting Box with each change you make. Or better still select one long chorus from the start. IMHO. Pardon the plug for version 2014, but it is an important improvement in the mixer. This is probably not the right way I am sure, but it does work.-----Leon

That is because different MIDI synths/samplers have different volume levels to them.

However, there is a one-time setting in the RealTracks and RealDrums Preferences where you can adjust the overall Volume of them to match your chosen MIDI synth.

Once you get that situation Normalized, it remains for as long as you leave it that way.

Much easier to mix.

I've tried this and here's what I find:

1) A positive "Change by" value will only increase the volume if there was a previous negative "Change by" value
2) Change by cannot raise the volume above the level set in the mixer
3) I can mute an instrument at the beginning of the song but Change by cannot be used to activate it
4) I can mute an instrument at the beginning of the song but then when I want it to play I have to use Return to Normal for at least one measure and at that point it will play with the volume level set in the mixer
5) Thus if I want to increase the volume above a non-zero level at a later point in a song I must set the volume in the mixer to at least the level that I want at that later point and set a negative Change by value at some earlier point in the song so that the volume earlier in the song is at the level that I want.

If I follow these principles it seems to work but I haven't exhaustively tested this yet to be certain.

Thanks very much for your help figuring this out!

Mac, That is true except that I run what I have. That would be a Lap Top then USB out to an Allen&Heath Zed10FX mixer, to a pair of QSC K12's. Since I am a so so (OLD) bass player with no guitar skills to create melody, I do what I can to use what comes with the SGU/MGU files I download for free. The closest thing I have to Midi management is my Solton MS 100 and MS 20 from years past. I do not choose to edit Midi except raise the volume of a Melody Track. The USB signal to the Allen&Heath mixer is rather weak. Before the 2014 version was available, this created volume problems for my simple set up. Yes, I could finish in RealBand and overcome this, but I am quite happy with BB. My needs are Very Simple . ;)Thanks.------Leon

Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
