Hello,
I recently upgraded from Band in a Box 2012.5 to Band in a Box 2014 for windows. I created a composition using real tracks, but now want to change each of the real tracks back to midi, but cannot. I tried saving the composition as a midi file then imported into Sonar X1 Producer and the tracks came up, but they were all empty. I never had this problem with band in a box 2012.5, if I wanted my composition exported to sonar x1 as a midi file, I saved it as a midi file and exported it no problems. I can't seem to do it with the 2014 version of band in a box. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

No amount of help will turn Realtracks into midi directly. RealTracks are Audio recordings, not midi, and never were. You cannot save audio as midi. Midi is data not sound. Audio is actual sound recordings. You can use a program like Melodyne editor to amke midi out of audio, but it will lack all the processed nuances of typical midi.
If you want to export midi to Sonar, you need to generate midi tracks, not realtracks. Use Midi styles in the style picker. You need to make a midi file and listen to it through a good midi synth, then export that file and open it in sonar, and you can use the synths there for better sound or sound you like.

A lot of the RT's have RealCharts that is the midi notation for that instrument, you can also use them on other sample instruments along with the RT. Harp Sample.mp3

yes but it has been said they are very basic for notation, and not for full tracking. Still if you want to do the work, then you can most likely edit the heck out of them and see what you get.
What the OP wants is to export the RTs and have Sonar play them as midi tracks. Seems hit and miss at the very best. My thoughts are why even start in RTs if you want midi. Start the project with midi styles and go from there. Far less potential for problems.

Hi James, It sounds like when you set up songs in 2012.5, you were using midi-based styles exclusively. These would suit you ideally given what you describe as your previous workflow. As Rob points out, Realtrack files are audio and, because of this, do not directly convert to midi. Solidrock is also correct in that if a Realtrack has notation associated with it, that notation is, in fact, a midi file and can be used to generate midi. Not all RTs have notation. To set up BIAB to use midi-based styles exclusively, go to Prefs (#1), select Realtracks (#2) and disable the auto substitute RTs for midi (#3).  With the above setting disabled, you'll be able to use midi only styles again and these will export fine into Sonar. If you want midi drums, you'll need to go into "Prefs | Realdrums" and disable the auto-substitute there, too. Hope this helps, Noel
