One day a florist goes to a barber for a haircut. After the cut he
asked about his bill and the barber replies,
"I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week."
The florist was pleased and left the shop.
When the barber goes to open his shop the next morning there is a "thank
you" card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.
Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill,
the barber again replies, "I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week."
The cop is happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up there is a "thank you"
card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.
Later that day, a college professor comes in for a haircut, and when he
tries to pay his bill, the barber again replies,
"I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this
week."
The professor is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber opens his shop, there is a "thank you"
card and a dozen different books, such as "How to Improve Your Business' and 'Becoming More Successful."
Then, a Member of Parliament comes in for a haircut , and when he goes
to pay his bill the barber again replies,
"I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week."
The Member of Parliament is very happy and leaves the shop.
The next morning when the barber goes to open up, there are a dozen
Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut.

Excellent Graham!
There's an apposite cartoon in one of the papers this morning following yesterday's momentous decision of the Commons Speaker resigning (last done only 300 years ago). One MP saying to another: "As soon as I saw what I'd been up to I knew the Speaker had to go."
What's really annoyed me in all the fracas is not so much the enormous expenses claims but their common mindset whereby a few years ago they collectively decided that they were worth FAR more in remuneration terms than we the public felt, knew that hiking their salaries would therefore be 'bad for appearances', so instead invented a secret 'trough' system to top up their salaries (sorry, at least triple them). THAT'S the true indicator of their lack of trust worthiness.
I'm angry and ashamed that our great and ancient institutions have been brought to a level lower than the worst despotic banana republic.

We do not have the problem in Canada.
Our ex priminister Brian Mulroney has informed us that it is all on the up and up and he did nothing wrong (recieving cash payments in the $250000 range) and forgetting to declare them as income (claimed about $70,000) but reported them later, and was not party to the negotiations that lead to his not paying penalties. He has even stated that perhaps the commisioner is correct that on a technicallity he was wrong, but if so, he was innocent of knowingly doing wrong.
I for one sleep better knowing that it was just an "honest mistake".
I feel better, knowing that I although I paid big time penalties for a late fileing, Brian did not recieve any special treatment. He just didn't have to pay penalties???
I hope he does not come to the site too often, as he sued the Government of Canada and hey settled for about $1,000,000 when he was charged with wrong doing in the matter. (I guess they decided they could not prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Sure everyone take and makes cash payments in $250000.00 when they are on the up and up.

Have you ever wonder why someone will spend a million (sometimes of their own money) )to campaign for a job that pays considerably less?
I wonder what is the latest head count of U.S. politicians in the federal pen? We have contributed 5 from Las Vegas.
And while I'm wondering, there was quite a stir concerning the $300,000 photo with Air Force One. I wonder what it cost for the President's town meetings all over the country.

I'm not saying or even suggesting that he was involved - but it's quite probable that the general public in Canada no longer puts too much faith in anything he says or did say.
It seems that his replies to the hearings haven't enhanced his credibility and reputation. "I put the cash in a safe for a few years, so didn't think it would be considered income".
Wow, if I received some cheques from clients, deposited them in my savings account (which I don't spend), I shouldn't owe income tax on them? I wouldn't recommend trying that.
Remember the old saying, "Reputation is what people think you are - character is what you are".
The British House of Commons story is very interesting too and I'm following it closely. In effect, heads still roll don't they?

One of the latest revelations is that one MP even claimed for a ruddy DUCK HOUSE for goodness sake. The were all moaning on BBC radio 2 yesterday that there's a strong feeling of dep depression in Parliament just now and that it's only a matter of time before there's a suicide. They won't get flowers sent from ME that's for sure

Oh eh, Jean le cretin got his buddies golf courses and passed cash around like it was dew worms.
Even the people in politics in our small city (1/2 a mill) got cash like the mayor's wife got a 200 grand a year contract to explain to the developer how municipal politics works,..darn.
Every political who leaves office has contacts that everyone wants him/her to talk to, get over it. Forget about it.
I worked for 3 levels of Goverment and found our real quick that morals and your ideals were garbage, they are a clique. If you ever knew you would throw up.
I've been involved in Canadian politics since the sixties, and have worked in investigative circles. Trust me the worst were the Fiberals, then the NDP, then the Conservatives. None have clean hands. Some just are not as bad as the others.
Living 50 miles from the US I get to listen to Detroit's mayor, American Senators from Ill a noise.etc...it's all sad....
At the end of the day vote....and read all you can.
In Canada we had Adscam and if anyone can point to another party doing worse then you've found the antichrist...

Oh I know that politicians are all cut from the same cloth; my point was that Muldoon's reputation is pretty well shot now.
At least I haven't heard anyone say that he seemed honest and forthright in his answers.
He will survive the Oliphant inquiry, but in the public's mind, his reputation won't. Andrew Coyne pretty well summed it up last week on At Issue (keep in mind that he's a small c conservative).

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums.
