I got a somewhat cheap laptop for Christmas, a Toshiba satellite with i3 and four gigs ram. Question is, why am I having lag time with the metering, is it because I have an i3 or the four gigs of ram, or is there some other way to get rid of the lag? Thanks

Thanks When you say 'Lag time with the metering' do you mean the Metronome or do you mean the Recorded music is out of time compared the to song itself? This could be related to using MME vs ASIO drivers for the Audio. Probably the computer is OK, but run DPC Latency Checker and a good benchmark speed test and perhaps report back the results.

I have an even cheaper 5 y/o Toshiba, T2080 and 2G ram. No problem here. We do need more info as to what you mean.

Keep in mind that DPC Latency Checker will not report correct results if you are running Windows 8. They know there is a problem and are working on an updated checker but it is not available yet. http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

There is no reason to run DPC LC on any of the newer offerings.
They will all pass, just at different points, all of which are going to be above and beyond what is needed to run BiaB.
The OP likely needs to do some adjustment as regards Audio Drivers is what I'm thinking.

As well as the driver issues, turn off all of the background stuff, like Windows update, indexing of the hard drive, email programs, wireless adapter if you can, etc. That stuff junks up the resources and usually causes a hiccup in BIAB when it is running. If you are using it strictly for a BIAB machine, kill the antivirus too but be sure you are not connected to the internet if you do.

The DPC Latency Checker works fine in Windows 8. The baseline is wrong (best you can do is 1000+ in the yellow) but it still identifies spikes. Spikes can easily occur from badly written drivers. Wireless networking is a prime target to check but spikes can be associated with other devices. It is a free utility and it does no harm to take a moment to rule out bad drivers. If the DPC checker says things are fine, then you look elsewhere for the cause of the audio stuttering. In some software, look for buffer settings to adjust.

Yes, I'm thinking that the Audio Drivers are going to be involved, need some answers on exactly what the O/P's problems actually are, as there is some uncertainty in the interpretation.

I'm also wondering what "the metering" means. Critter, please give us some more detail.
As far as an i3 processor, that's faster than my desktop production machine that uses a Core 2 Duo, so I'm sure your problem is solvable.

Sorry about confusion, I meant volume and master volume meters react slower than the song is played. Like you play a note and a tad later the meters react, they lag behind. I hope that makes sense. That doesn't happen on my desktop.

That is exactly what I figured you meant from the first post.
Read what I have said about it and get in there and experiment with those critical settings inside the programs and also inside the ASIO control panel if trying to use ASIO sound drivers.
Also -- new computers often come heavily laden with all sorts of bloatware from the mfrs and also from companies attempting to sell full versions by tacking on stuff that works partially and expires. Many of these can get in the way of the kind of work we do.
Bing or Google a free program called, "PC Decrapifier" - download and read the instructions, use it to rather painlessly remove all that crap. Make your new puter lean and mean.

After looking further in audio drivers, I lowered the latency to 104 and the problem was solved. As usual I jumped the gun without looking deeper. I also was going to add the latency checker to this machine but it says it doesn't work properly with windows 8.1. Thanks for the info.....

See my next-to-last post above about the DPC Latency Checker. It's still useful in Windows 8. Glad you solved your problem though.

Yes Matt, I agree. I was the one who suggested these tests, including possibly ASIO drivers. My thinking, and not knowing enough detail of the problem, was to try to assist by performing some tests and going through the process of elimination. The Latency Checker test certainly wouldn't have hurt. Appreciate the clarification with running with Windows 8 also. Thanks. Trev
