Hi All,

I've been running PT in Vista using MME drivers.
If's been fine and after adjusting that MME offset value for Vista because the audio comes in offset by 50-70ms late, it works great to "offset" that. That PC can't run ASIO. No matter how I set it up, it cracks and pops, etc.

I got a new(er) pc which is running windows 8 and it CAN run ASIO. BUT, like the MME in Vista, the audio comes in a few ms late.

The original setting (MME Offset) of course doesn't affect the ASIO.

Am I missing one that does?

In ASIO4All, there's several settings for latency, but does that really affect where it "lands" in the tracks view?

Thanks in advance,

jjcousin

YES, it does really affect the latency and that's what those settings are there for.

The difference is that, when using any sort of ASIO driver, the latency setting must be done in the driver's particular Control Panel and not in the host software. It is usually called, "Buffer Settings" but not always.

Experiment with both higher and lower settings, too, for sometimes the default setting is actually too slow for some of the more modern puters.

Hi JJ, and welcome.

It's not the PC that is having problems with ASIO and latency, it is your factory sound card.

Some times you can get the factory card to run ok with audio projects that are smaller in size. Adjusting the setting for buffers and latency can sometimes work, but essentially, the real issue is not solved, just covered up.

Most factory cards are designed to run simple audio files generally one at a time for listening to your MP3's or watching a video. MME drivers are great for that as are the simple chips sets in the mother board which we refer to as the "sound card".

Once you start to mix multiple audio waves and MIDI tracks with softsynths, you get into the latency areas of the factory cards and the crappy MME drivers they tend to use. Since most of the factory chips will not run ASIO properly, people try to use ASIO4ALL.... some can get it to work, others like me are not able to get it to work right.

The solution is to purchase a third party musical interface such as one from Focusrite, M-Audio, Presonus, or Roland and set it up using the ASIO drivers. Once this is done, the issue of latency becomes a non-issue.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Well, I'm using a VoiceLive2 AS the audio interface so I'm not sure the "factory sound card" is in the picture here. I DO have a factory sound card and another USB mixer which show up in the Windows (Win8) Sound item under Control Panel. I've "enabled" all of them, though I've made the VoiceLive2 the "default" for both recording and playback. I'm recording by monitoring through the VoiceLive2's headphone jack.

Mac, since I'm (trying to) use ASIO4ALL, the settings I should fiddle with are the ones in the ASIO4ALL GUI, right?

I've been thinking that "latency" is the delay between what is happening in real time and...something else...and I guess the "something" is where it lands in the track, huh?

---
One weird thing I noticed with the older PC trying to run the ASIO4ALL...after recording a take and playing it back...as the track went on, it got INCREASINGLY out of sync with the already recorded tracks! I'm not getting that here with the newer PC, but it was very unsettling. MME worked better there.
