Have a Delta Audiophile 2496. Got a new comp and the Vista OS state's there's a compatibility issue. Thought I remember awhile back peeps having sound card issues with Vista. Current comp runs XP OS. Here's what I did:
1) Snapped the Audiophile 2496 into the proper slot.
2) Fired up the new comp.
3) Downloaded the drivers for the Audiophile 2496 ( Vista SP1...which is what my new Vista OS is)
4) Vista doesn't recognize the 2496 sound card. ( GRR.....)
I uninstalled the drivers that came with the new comp and that didnt work. Is it possible that i did things out of proper sequence? Perhaps i should do this:
1) Download the drivers for the Audiophile 2496.
2) Uninstall the exsisting Vista OS drivers.
3) Snap in the Audiophile 2496 sound card. Any ideas? Swanny

Steps one and two likely let Vista go ahead and plug 'n pray some generic driver for the card or the like.
Check Add/Remove Hardware in Control Panel, see if you can't either uninstall the AP or at least point that applet to install using the downloaded file instead.

This is where a real axe comes in handy. Wear a touque, check wool shirt, suspenders and rubber boots and have at the thing.
That solves almost all my frustrations, except the left hand/arm can't be involved due to that ostereo-pour-oh-sis. The 18 year old daughter informed me she did a school project on it and it's the Vasecotomy (never do that, grapefruits sitting on a bag of frozen peas for 8 days), plus the stereo-oids for allegies when I was a teen, plus smoking plus drinking. Nice.
Next life I'm gonna be a vegetable-arian, alien, non smoking, toking oxy-more-on-ick, tea-toad-aller, commie, hippie peace-nick with long hair and sandalls. Yer average toronna downtown resident.
Problem is you bought a fancy pants board and you need to downgrade. My old twenty buck creative mp3+ works great wif vista..go finger.
Guitar players...always fretting about one thing or another.

According to the quick Start Guide:
"Do NOT install the Delta PCI card in your computer until the M-Audio drivers have been installed."
Hopefully, Mac's suggestion will get you straightened out.

I have the 2496 installed with Vista 64 bit drivers and it works just fine.
Take the card out of the computer, uninstall the software, reboot the computer, reinstall the software, shut down the computer, and reinstall the audio card.

After the installation, have you double-checked that volumes for the various components are all set to maximum or near maximum? I noticed that when I installed my soundcard software in Vista (32-bit), the sound volumes were set at minimum and/or muted. Right-click the speaker icon in the task bar and choose playback.

When i right click on the sound icon, noticed it doesnt show any speakers at all. Strange. Shows the sound card working properly. Apparently, the OS doent think I've got speakers connected. But I do. Any idea how to get it to recognize my speakers?

It could be a faulty lead or plug or possibly socket into the card.
If you have a multimeter (at least that's what we call here in Australia) - it's a electronic device for measuring resistance, current, voltage, etc., just set it to resistance and see if you have damaged leads or plugs.
As an example: if it was a lead with 6.5 mm mono plugs at each end, you'd touch one probe on the tip of one end and the other probe on the tip at the other end. You'd then repeat this procedure with barrel one end to barrel other end. In both cases you should get near zero resistance. The last check would be barrel one end to tip the other end. In both combinations of this, you'd expect to get infinite resistance.
Any resistance reading other than the above would indicate faults.

Sounds like you might be confusing the Delta card with your onboard sound. The Delta Control Panel doesn't have a speaker catagory.
Backtrack and explain your physical hookup and also what you're seeing in the sound icon in a little more detail. Also go to the Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Sounds and Audio Devices and check what card you've selected for Windows Audio and Midi Playback.

I have three sound devices currently installed on my computer, my onboard sound chip, my Asus sound card, and my Delta 2496. The only one that will work, usually, is the one that is selected and set as 'Default Device.' Normally, for me, that's my Asus Digital Out, which goes to my receiver. This is the Vista output. However, my Sonar/BIAB/RB stuff is set differently.
The 2496 should show S/PDIF and Line 1/2 as output devices. You'll want to use the Line 1/2, which are the line outputs from the 2496. They'll either be hooked to the Tape In of your mixer, or to your monitors. If you have an external D/A converter, you would use the S/PDIF out to that.
If you are using a playback device, and you change your settings, you'll need to stop the device, reset the settings, and then restart the application/song.
Now, you should select MME drivers in RB, for example, and then set 1/2 In and 1/2 Out as the audio in and outs in the Audio Setup dialog. The connection on the RCA connectors out from the Delta should go to some sort of powered speakers, or amplifier, so you can hear what's coming out.
In your system tray, there is probably a red circle with a white > point to the right. This is the Delta Control Panel. Click on the Mixer tab. Make sure, on the very right hand side, that the Delta AP box is checked, under 'Select PCI card.'
The Master sliders should be all the way up.
The 1/2 In sliders should be at least to 5 or so.
The S/PDIF stuff can be turned all the way down.
The SW 1/2 return should be up.
Click on the Output tab, and make sure the 1/2 Out is all the way up.
Click on the Hardware tab. Under Sample settings, set that for 44,100 and leave the buffer at 256.
Set the Sync Source to Internal (Unless you're using a S/PDIF Input device)
Leave everything else alone.
Now, you should be able to record and playback in whatever application you're using.

Okay, that's Vista. However, you can still set the onboard audio as your default output, for your computer bleeps and bloops, and then set the 2496 in whatever DAW you're using, and the output will still work with the DAW going to the 2496 without it having to go through the Vista Sound Control panel.
On the other hand, if that's your ONLY sound card you're using, yeah, you have to set it as the default in the Vista sound panel.

I turn all System sounds to OFF as a matter of routine.
Machine runs a bit faster without 'em.
Room is quieter.
Monitor speakers, tweeters and ears cannot be accidentally damaged.
You don't really need any of the system sounds.

This "low volume" situation after installing Window Vista is NOT ONLY a BIAB issue. This common to all computers who have switched to VISTA Google this problem. Its frustrating. Quote:

Yea, on XP my output is louder than Vista. I have to take the system audio out rca jacks and put them into one of the inputs that has a preamp, otherwise the sound is a bit too low. Same band in a box setup, same volume settings, just not enough omph. Like me most days.

Mac, I ain't running my MMPG FPS's through my audio gear! Besides, I have a nice Sony 7.1 receiver hooked up for that. Not everyone has a dedicated audio computer, although they probably should. Gary

We always turned off System Sounds on all puters down at the lab, too, Gary.
Makes for a quieter workplace, plus your coworkers won't know when you've repeatedly done sumthin' stupid...
