Check the MIDI Device settings in Options-Preferences-MIDI tab

Chances are you were using a DXi softsynth for output before and simply need to check the box for Reroute MIDI to default DXi synth, and then select a default synth. Doing this would restore the synth playback sound.

However, if you are using an external synth:

The M-Audio MIDI out connection sends MIDI data to your external synth (via the MIDI connection)

This hardware synth then receives this digital 'data' and turns it into sound

You may need to connect the audio output of the hardware synth (sound) to one of the audio inputs on the M-Audio card, so you can then record that 'sound'.

You are sending MIDI 'data' out to the synth and need to record the resulting 'sound' from that synth into PTPA.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
