I have lost my mind an committed to doing a version of Purple Rain this coming weekend . . . does anyone have a BIAB file they would be willing to share, swap of even sell?

I have already gone the midi route and if need be I will use the download midi but sure would love to have a quality BIAB file as it would keep the consistence between this song and my current BIAB tracks.

Thanks either way,

I've got the Purple Rain original sheet music I could scan to .PDF for you but I don't have a .MID or BIAB for you.

Thanks anyway Steve but I don't think I have the time to build the file from scratch, it may be just an acoustic version.

Danny,

They have several versions of it at Karaoke Version for a $1.99.

http://www.karaoke-version.com/

These aren't MIDI files, they're studio musicians. Once you purchase a song you can customize them by downloading one track at a time or any combination of tracks. No extra charge.

I'm not affiliated in any way. Just a heads up.

Thanks Bob, I did purchase that one but (for me anyway) a real polished track like that leaves very little room for personal input and creativity. So I am guessing I will put something together in BIAB that can eventually (with more time for fine tuning) become a part of my playlist if I do decide to keep the tune in some sort of rotation.

PS: Maybe the editing option can also make me feel more confortable with the tracks, i.e. the guitar solo is great, in fact too great as I am not that accomplished. So I like to only present what I can play on demand in the future . . . that make sense?

Thanks again,

There are dozens of sites on the net where you can get the midi versions to tens of thousands of songs, many are free.... I'm sure PR is there too.

As far as the names of those sites..... I don't have a clue... google search will be your friend.

You can find my music at:
www.herbhartley.com
Add nothing that adds nothing to the music.
You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both.

The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Herb,

I have many midi versions, my request was for a BIAB file. I know a shot in the dark, but hey if you got a gun you have to shoot it sometimes.

I think the idea of doin' it by yourself with no backing tracks has merit, Danny.

And since the song really does not have "interesting" changes, good one for going gospel style and push the singing.

Mac,

Another brain flatulent here, maybe a reggae version would be interesting also . . . thoughts?

I see four chords. Your solo version should be doable. You will however have to upload a video for us.

Thanks Dan I have decided that I will not even try the traditional version, but a different style entirely.

Regarding the video, well I am afraid it will be done down, dirty and live on SJ this Saturday night.

I got talked into participating in a "Purple Rain Saturday", which means anyone with anyone guts (or is just plain stupid and I fit into both categories) will take a challenge for some fans in the form of a doing a song that is not on your playlist. This time it happened to be Purple Rain.

With this said there will be many versions of Purple Rain performed on SJ throughout the day Saturday. Should be very interesting to say the least, as I have not flown by the seat of these old pants in quite some time.

Thanks to everyone, I have my style and I am working on a BIAB file as I type.

Later all, and wish me luck!

Mac this smooth jazz rendition is KILLER! I had not heard this one before, now I am torn between two good arrangements.

Live is good - Thanks!

His purple-ness is also a ridiculously good guitar player in more styles than you can shake a stick at.

I saw him on the Tavis Smiley show one time and his live performance on that show as a smooth jazz acoustic guitar player.

I found it - gotta love YouTube: http://youtu.be/nf7yRFk-ZfE?t=11m4s

This is one guy I would love to hang with some time and just pick his brain and just jam - room full of synths, guitars and a killer drummer. Maybe get some of the Minneapolis scene funk folks in for dinner, etc.

It would be crazy fun!

I really wish he wouldn't have gone where he went in the 80's, while it made him success during that time frame, I also think it turned off so many people that the general public does not consider him to be a real musician. He's one of the most creative on the planet, IMO, and one of the best 'music director' front men that exist.

Anyway, back on topic - have fun Danny!

Danny,

I have Purple Rain. I created it a while back and don't remember how accurate it is. But it will give you something to go with. Let me know how to get it to you.

I place the musicality there on the OTHER guitarist, Prince was basically just strummin' chords.

A typical situation, really, where the Session Man, the Journeyman Musician who has worked and studied can take a chord change and work the embellishment, add extensions, runs and riffs, sometimes even create the musical hooks, etc. to what would otherwise sound like what it really is, a folk song sung by a good singer, accompanied by that singer's strummed chords.

IMO both types are typically necessary - but not always utilized well - and occasionally we will find one individual who an cover both tasks well.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
