I place the musicality there on the OTHER guitarist, Prince was basically just strummin' chords.

A typical situation, really, where the Session Man, the Journeyman Musician who has worked and studied can take a chord change and work the embellishment, add extensions, runs and riffs, sometimes even create the musical hooks, etc. to what would otherwise sound like what it really is, a folk song sung by a good singer, accompanied by that singer's strummed chords.

IMO both types are typically necessary - but not always utilized well - and occasionally we will find one individual who an cover both tasks well.

Mac, I believe there's another Tavis Smiley show, where Prince did a solo number on acoustic - I'm not even sure there was vocals. I seem to remember it was part of this show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6Cgg42JPxw I could not find evidence of the performance from that show on YouTube, however. This duo was all that I found from a different time that he was a guest. Most of what you find on YouTube with Prince playing is some type of wailing solo or James Brown style funk . He picks his bands well. The all-girl band he has played with recently are all killer musicians and performers.
