I do not own Band in a Box yet. This question will determine if it will fit my needs. I want to make backing tracks to play my saxophone with. I have a PC and a Ipad. The PC is not in a location I could practice my sax at. Right now I use my Ipad to play karaoke mp3's I download from ITunes, hooked to a Bluetooth boom box, to practice with at another location. Is it possible to export what ever sound file the Band in a Box produces, to a stand alone file the Ipad could play the same way I use mp3's now? Thanks. I can't stand in front of my PC and play and I don't want to by a PC laptop.

You can save your completed BB SGU file as a WAV file.
If you need mp3, just put it in your DAW and convert it to mp3.

Hi Jimmy.

Adding to what Ian has said above, here are the relevant options found under the "File" menu ...

Hope this helps,
Noel

Hi Ian,

I know that some people have said that MP3s do not save at high quality. That has never been the case for me. The process that the MP3 export option takes me through is below.

1. A dialogue box opens that prompts me for a file name.

2. BIAB then creates a temporary WAV file and, then when that's done, another option box pops up that prompts for setting the required MP3 quality.

(The red circle on the image below is an arrowhead. Clicking on this will cause a dropdown menu to appear that makes available all encoding options.)

I set this to 192 or 160 kBit/s and 44,100 Hz (#2 on the image).

Also, I leave the "Name" (#3) as [untitled] since I have already created the name for the audio file in the very first step.

This works for me.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. Ian, I reckon that Sydney has one of the best climates going in Australia. How is your son finding his new home?

Yes, yes, and yes.

Plus there is also the option to use BB2GO on the iPad, which can communicate with the PC from the iPad and load songs if it is online and on the internet.

You also have the famous PGMusic "30 day No Questions Asked" return policy, which is like getting a full featured demo that saves songs for 30 days. If you don't like what you get, which is highly unlikely, you can return the thing on the 30th day for a full refund. What's to lose?

You can also download the free Wave editor from NCH called Wavepad and use it.

http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

I have this editor and love it. I export all my songs as waves and open them in Wavepad. There, I trim the silence and count in, as well as convert it to MP3. It has all the major bit rates topping out at 320kbs on down.

I reduce from 320kbs only if the file is too large for the server I plan to upload it to. I often use box.com when the file won't fit into the other server I use that has a 10mb file limit.

Noel,

Thats interesting, I have never seen all those options on my system for BIAB. I only have seen this:

Do you know exactly what you loaded to get those options?

Noel is likely using the free LAME encoder codec.

It looks like what I see here, anyway.

That can be safely found, downloaded and installed from the Audacity website.

The codec that comes with Windows looks like your setup.

Was sure I had install that years ago.

So I did it again just now and no joy. BIAB does not see those files even after a complete reboot. Is there someplace in BIAB I need to set it to look for the LAME installed codec?

It's convoluted but here is the method I used, and this got it installed in Win7, even shows in WMP encoder list.

Right click on Command prompt and 'Run as Administrator' (that may scare some already).

I downloaded and unzipped the ACM file from Rarewares (which is linked to from the Lame site).
http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-dshow-acm.php#lame-current-acm

There is a 'how to install' txt file in the package, follow it exactly including moving files to C:\Lame.

Copy all the extracted files to a new empty folder called C:\Lame in order for the following command lines to work. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Now, in your Command prompt (running with admin rights) insert the following and copy/paste it to be exact. You have to right-click to paste into a Command prompt.

cd %windir%\SysWOW64

Hit Enter
Command prompt should change directories

Then copy/paste
rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 C:\lame\LameACM.inf

This was found at http://windows7themes.net/installing-lame-on-windows-7-x64.html (so you know the source).

Following directions closely worked for me on this new W7 professional machine.

See below for how it lists in RB compressed export options (all bitrates available)

As always download safely; scan before installing, not after! I'm not vouching for links, just that it worked as of today.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

As you can see it installs as it's own codec this way, as evidenced by my WMP codec list below.
This list is accessed by clicking Help-About WinMediaPlayer, then clicking the Technical Support text at the bottom in recent versions.

Below is Fruanhofer, Windows and Lame all running side by side.

rharv,

That looks crazy. I have been using the LAME codac for years on XP and win 7 and now win 8, and never seen such an install requirement. Not meaning to shoot the messenger, I'm sure this is all valid. I am just wondering why I have never had to jump through these hoops in the past. Honestly, I didn't even know what I was missing in BIAB rendering to mp3 - since it just always worked with my single option. I actually don't even use BIAB for this purpose since I render to mp3 from Reaper, and that appears to have all the options for LAME.

While I am not afraid of following the instructions, since I can just blame you if anything goes bad, but I don't think I am going to pursue fixing what ain't broke.

Thanks for the info, it may help others.

Dan,

As far as I can tell from your image, you have those options. There's a little dropdown arrow on the far right of text line called "Attributes". It's to the immediate right of "6Kb/sec". Have you tried left-clicking your mouse on that?

Regards,
Noel

Noel, If I told you I had never clicked the little dropdown arrow, I am sure you and everyone reading would lose all respect for me! crazy So let me assure you all, yes I did and no there are no other options available. grin But it don't hurt to ask, thanks.

Dan,

I don't use LAME. Once I had to, two or three years ago, though, I found that I had to remove lame.dll from the \bb directory.

If you have lame.dll in your \bb folder, try removing it and testing to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't, then you can put the file back.

Regards,
Noel

56k is the highest MP3 export rate with the basic windows install.
It is what it is.

To my knowledge, the true LAME codec comes with command line functions only. Anything other than that it is someone else adding compatibility. This command line method I described (run once) installs LAME onto windoze itself so your other programs can use it.

Take it or leave it.
This method lets RB/PT/BB see it.
If you don't need it, don't bother. For those who do, it's there.
I used to be able to right-click the INF file and install it, but that didn't work today, so I thought I'd post another way.

Just tryin' to help.
But yeah, it's probably my fault if anything goes wrong.
