I plan to use my new Digitech VL3D with MIDI to get the full use out of it. I have always used MIDI IN/OUT plugs , but my lap top has USB now. So to drive an outboard unit with midi signals from BIAB, do I have to configure something in BIAB, or is it automatic? I just need a MIDI signal to the harmonizer so it knows what key to harmonize. I have a USB cable and two USB ports on the lap top. Are USB ports numbered somewhere, or is it plug and play, or use the device wizard or what?
Thank you in advance;
Gene

Hi Gene You can buy an adaptor with short cables = 1 x USB to 2 x Midi (I/O) http://www.edirol.net/products/en/UM-1S/There are some USB to Midi cables that are plug and play - http://www.musicvillageusa.com/details.asp?SKU=UNO - the main point being is to get a quality make as we have had a few problems here with cheap faulty cables You can use any USB port but once used for a particular device it is best to go to the same one jazzman

Assuming you mean you have a MIDI-to-USB device, some are plug 'n pray, which is called, "Class Compliant" and will be recognized immediately by the OS when plugged in. The OS should be able to do that, however. Older Operating Systems such as W2K or the like may need to be upgraded and even then it could depend upon the hardware in your motherboard as to whether or not a Class Compliant USB device will be automatically recognized. If it is, all you have to do is start up the host music program after plugging in the device and turning hardware on, then look in the host program's MIDI output selection window for the USB device. Class Complaint MIDI connects often show up as "USB Audio Device" in XP. If more than one, they will be numbered - USB Audio 2 - or the like.
Other devices may include their own drivers which must be installed. These can usually be found in the Support section of each manufacturer's website for download and install. Be sure to find the one written for your operating system and read and follow the installation directions to the letter.
You only need to assign the MIDI Output side to send the data for the chords to that device.

I have used an earlier version of the Edirol UM-1 (the UM-1SX) for nearly five years. It has proven simple and reliable. Be mindful to always connect it (or any USB device) to the same port or Windows may 'lose' it.

I want to know how it works with a CC command sent to trigger the harmony on and off.

Thank you all for the responses. Tomorrow is my day off, and I am demoing the harmonizer at a girl friends house for 5 hours. I have already tried the guitar straight in, works good, follows chord progressions; Line out of BB with a sound track, works good, follows chords. . . Tomorrow is the Midi hook up. Robh, don't know if I will have a chance to trigger CC commands, I will have to read up on that and do it in event editor(?) I guess. But I will try to drive it with MIDI chords. The lady is named Robyn, and sings alot of Gospel. I am going to team up with her in the future. Thursday is our first meeting. She has a Martin guitar of sometime, so I am envious already... Will try hard to get something down on the HD to post and share for the weekend.

Exactly what I've been doing with my new usb midi cable. The computer recognizes it, but I can't get any output. It might be because of the very cheap price. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I've also noticed that sometimes I do get what I pray for, too.
But not when it is microsoft, of course.
Then again, I don't pray to microsoft...
