QWERTY Keyboard Wizard works fine, if you have no MIDI keyboard connected, if you get the all-important RHYTHMIC pattern of the keypresses for your intended Melody line instead of concentrating on the Notes chosen. Also helps a lot not to stay on just one key when doing that.

After tapping in the correct Rhythm pattern for the Melody, we must use the Music Notation Editor or the PianoRoll View to grab each note, which would then be of proper timing and duration, to the intended pitch for each note. Takes longer to type this than actually do it.

I usually like to SING, WHISTLE, or use the "singer in my head" while also punching the qwerty keys, that alone can get the right rhythm patterns for that Melody.

As for the latency, revisit the Options->MIDI/Audio window and experiment with the latency setting number a bit when using MME drivers - this also depends on what you are using for a Softsynth at the time, which we don't know at this stage of it.

As for not hearing the Melody track at all while playing, use the MUTE function of the Melody track, may work, don't know, I've never tried that, would rather hear the thing as I press the keys.
