I posted the following on the HP support site.
"My hp4620 printer would only print black on one half of the line. This progressed to no print in black. I changed the cartridge and followed all of the support recommendations including updating the firmware.
By chance, I found that ink is indeed leaving the cartridge. It is puddling on the bottom of the printer.
Any suggestions for this just out of warranty printer?
Thanks Much,"
Whatdaya think?

Get another lowcost HP printer and throw that one out. Cost of repair, if you can't do it yourself, is not effective when compared to prices of printers these days. http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng....p;search_sort=4 --Mac

That's the conclusion I've come to. I guess I need to buy the same model so I can use the $62.00 pack of cartridges I just bought from Costco. Don S.

Do yer homework online, Danny, find out what other HP printer models may also use the same cartridge.
Then go shopping with that shortlist in hand.

Yep. In the meantime I'm printing out my text in green, or orange, or blue, whatever.

Don, you didn't say if the ink you bought from Costco is the HP brand, or some cheaper replacement ink brand. If it's HP, your printer might even be worth a try for a warranty claim. If it's an off-brand, then no, and consider throwing that ink away.

Hi Matt,
The replacements are HP. I ran the serial# through their site and it shows up as being out of warranty.
I notice that every time I replace a printer, it takes a different cartridge. I doubt that this is incidental.

Part of that is simple technology changes, design changes, etc. being implemented, hold the conspiracy theories, its just a plastic printer.

OK, good Don. Time to scrap that one.
The other reason for changing printer cartridges is marketing. That's where they make all their money, on the ink, not on the printers.

Take a minute to think back.
Recall what the COST of a printer that was capable of doing what today's rather common inkjets can do used to be.
Recall that those printers were mechanically "built like tanks" typically with internal steel frames, overkill mechanics - and the fact that at first only Laser Printers could do that sort of work - and then only in Black Ink.
Inkjet technology changed all that.
Mass Production and more utilization of lightweight composites rather than metals in the internals, which allows for all sorts of cost savings in production and even assembly techniques, lighter overall weight, which greatly reduces shipping costs, we now enjoy being able to pick up a very good quality printer locally for less than 50 dollars US.
Inkjet cartridges are also still evolving technogically speaking, the advent of the cartridges with the electronics built into them represents another development that was done to solve a field problem by allowing for replacement of the critical feed head with every cartridge. That technology is still ongoing and changes are to be expected. So far, each generational change has also brought a better printer for less money.
Environmentally speaking, today's lighter weight printers are certainly less impact on the nation's landfills and recycling centers than those older designs, that typically also outlived their usefulness in service, leaving pounds of junk to dispose of and high replacement cost.
Today we can replace a malfunctioning printer for as little as $29.95.
Ink Cartridges are also much better value. Consider what the old Laser Printer replacement cartridge cost/size etc. was. Not to mention its Energy Use.
Printer Cost </= 100 bucks.
Printer mentioned here is out of warranty now - how many Ink Cartridges were successfully used to print how many pages before this printer malfunctioned?
Any way this is sliced, the user/owner is ahead of the game.

All true. I managed one of the first retail computer stores in the country in the late 70s. Our laser printer cost nearly a thousand dollars.

I received an answer to my post on the HP user forum from someone who said they were connected with HP. They suggested that I might receive help regardless of the printer being out of warranty.
Bottom line: The printer is being replaced free of charge, because my problem was a known issue.
Thank you Lord and HP.

So much for the conspiracy theorists' notion that all the companies are out to do nothin' but screw the consumers who represent their bread and butter.
You'll get a brand new printer - with a brand new warranty on it.
Can't ask for better than that.

--Mac I've been through this with HP a couple of times. Experience indicates that it will be a refurb with a 30-day warranty. I still think the world of their aftermarket service and support. R.

Richard,
It will be a refurb with a 90 day warranty and the option to buy an extended 3 yr. warranty for about $2.00 a month.
Actually, the one I'm sending back is a refurb with a different problem
I'm not complaining.
