I'll say it again. That Elvis Costello is one lucky son of a gun to have this woman as his wife. Diana is not only stunningly beautiful but one of the greatest women in Jazz music EVER. A true modern wonder and incredible musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and artist. Hard to believe she'll be turning 50 this year! WOW. Still an incredibly beautiful woman in my opinion.

Well, this is Russel Malone's
Blues intro to Diana Krall's jazz take on Route 66,
as performed by a young Diana at the '96 Montreal Jazz Festival!!

A perfect way to start out a Friday morning!

And here's some Benson singin and playin' "All of Me"...

Russel Malone is one fantastic guitarist as is George Benson IMHO. I have a few of their albums and CDs.

Benson has an early album called Tenderly where he plays these songs:
Track Listing
1. You Don't Know What Love Is
2. Stella by Starlight
3. Stardust
4. At the Mambo Inn
5. There and Everywhere Here
6. This Is All I Ask
7. Tenderly
8. I Could Write a Book

A CD was released a few years ago. If you can get a copy or you can listen to it via x-box it is well worth your time. This was done before he went pop.

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

McCoy Tyner is also on the CD with George Benson. McCoy is fantastic as well. Later, Ray

The woman can flat out PLAY. Her musicians on the Live in Paris DVD are awesome too. Anthony Wilson is one of my favorite guitar players, and of course, John Clayton is awesome.

Doin' "All of Me" in D Major like that makes for a very bright sound to the old Standard.

Give it a try sometime.

Also works to "to up" the half step for the finish in Eb, go out "bluesy".

George.

"Beyond the Sea" -- up a step from the standard fake chart starting key of F.

This too, brings a more modern sounding "brightness" to it.

After all the internal "standard" key changes, the arrangement moves to
Eb for the guitar soloing, a good blues key, then out in Ab.

Choosing not to blow the standards in the "regular" fakebook keys can change a lot for you and your jazz endeavors. The key to this one is to not get too carried away, try moving the standard key only a step or half step in either direction from the original.

A good way to escape the "same old, same old" and not only make things more interesting for your audiences, but for you as well.

In my Trio, if I look at the bassist and raise my eyebrows while finishing a chorus, it means that we are about to go up a half step on the following chorus...

Bill Evans played many of the standards in the sharp keys. "Here's That Rainy Day" in B, for instance, "A Time For Love" in D. I try to do likewise. Later, Ray
