If anybody frequents pawn shops, and you happen to see Dean's butt ugly electric pink bass guitar hanging on a wall, let me know ASAP. I would like to buy one for a friend of mine. She'd only hang it on her wall as she doesn't play a 4 string, but it's the gag gift value.
And if a shocking pink guitar doesn't make you gag.....

Eddie,
Used to be I would look for pawn shops whenever I had some time to kill. Only made a purchase or two over the span of many years but since broadcasting of the pawn shop TV shows great deals are just about impossible to find. In fact of late a rarely frequent them anymore.
But when I do I am sure a pink bass would get my attention man. :>

Still lookin' for that thang, Ed?
There's another way to go, since its basically a gag gift.
One inexpensive 4-string plank bass.
One pack of aluminum oxide sanding paper from the local auto parts.
One can of flat white auto paint of the same type as the pink.
One or two cans of Hot Pink spraypaint, from auto shop also.
One can of clear acrylic topcote from same place.
Remove neck, pups, etc. and sand body to give it some "tooth" to adhere the new paint. Start with about 220grit or so. Move to maybe 400 grit.
Well ventilated area, and wear a paper face filter, 'K?
Hang body from kotanga alloy or rope.
Paint it white first, to make it easier for the PINK to cover, also for that necessary glow. Couple light coats should do it at most, then light wetsanding with the 100grit, again just for "tooth" on the new paint.
Light coats, letting each very light coat dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. First coat should be barely existent, looking like tiny dots. repeat, repeat, repeat, building up those thin layers.
After she's all Pink, a light wet (with water) sanding of the pink paint with 100grit.
Apply clearkote, again light coat is better, if it looks like it needs more gloss after the first light coat dries, repeat with another very light coat.
Screw it all back together and done.
Lazy man's method:
Use screwdriver to remove neck, pups and etc. from body, drop only the body off at a local Autobody shop, tell the cat you want in in bright Pink. Pay the man, but not too much. Reassemble.

That's great for the body, Mac, but the dean has a hot pink neck too. I suppose I could do it anyway and mask the frets.... By the time I pay for the paint job I am probably at the same $125 or so I can find one, and then she doesn't lose the "Dean" logo. If it goes that far I'll consider just painting a cheapie. The pawn shop usually has a throwaway for 50 bucks or so. She ain't THAT good of a friend, but anybody with pink streaks in her blond hair HAS to own a pink bass....

BTW, why does it have to be a Dean? I think you'll have an easier time finding a Daisy Rock bass in pink.
But even more common is Daisy Rock 6 strings in pink. Guitar Sinner has a couple of them for under $150 right now.

Eddie, if you go play some of the Daisy Rocks (while no-one is looking, of course) some of them are pretty dang decent instruments compared to cheapo instruments from days of old. If it's simply an objet d'art, then the Daisy Rock route will lead you to more examples. Just thought about this - also check out the lower end guitars at rondomusic.net I have purchased a solid cedar top classical guitar and a sort of copy of a 62 custom P-bass from there and they are players. Each was under $150 new. The P bass copy I bought became a favorite of the bass players at our church, one with a master's degree in music instruction from Indiana University. He has a high-end American strat outfitted with a piezo bridge, can play circles around just about anyone I know, and after spending quality time with my bass, bought a 5 string fretless Douglas model and loves it. You might call there and tell Kurt what you are trying to do and he might be able to special order just what you are looking for (painted headstock for example) from his supplier in China.

I think I need to order that. This is a girl with pink glasses, pink hair, pink cell phone case, a pink car (one of her cars), and often pink clothing while playing with her heavy metal band. She MUST have a pink bass.

There are a lot of good quality guitars too available at a pawnshop. You just need to check out every item that you buy from a pawn shop with extreme caution. Check out to see if the guitar's strings are in perfect condition. You can also ask from any of the pawn brokers about the past of the guitar you're about to own.

Check out to see if the guitar's strings are in perfect condition. You can also ask from any of the pawn brokers about the past of the guitar you're about to own. Good advice here. The best time and places to shop is right after spring break at any of the spring break vacation/holiday areas. Kids bring guitars as well as other instruments, blow all of their money then pawn their instruments to get home. Also if you know about guitars you can get better deals on a slightly damaged guitar. For example two years ago we were in Kissimmee Florida and it rained one day. I decided, with my wife's permission of course, to check out pawn shops for a guitar. I found a Samick acoustic that had a tuning knob broken. It had all six strings, was in tune and every thing else about it was fine. I bargained down to $50 USD and bought it. I thought that it would be a throw away until I got home and found out it was worth around $350. So I bought new tuners and strings for it. Total cost $110!
My momma didn't raise a fool. And if she did it, was one of my brothers.

Over here in the UK, we tend to label these shops as two different entities, it is either a pawn shop where the item is pawned for cash, and redeemed again when cash is available to get it back. The shop gives a time limit so if the item is not redeemed within say a week, it then goes on sale to the general public.
The other type is a genuine second hand shop where you take unwanted stuff that you don't want back and hopefully get a reasonable price for it, the shop puts it up for sale straight away, or at least after cleaning and checking it out.
However, I have obtained a few brass instruments via the second hand shops, mainly because there is something odd about them and not instruments that would see normal brass band use here in the UK. From an early Chinese imported Lark cornet, horribly tinny sound with an oversized mouth piece receptor, to a two valved soprano marching bugle from America in the key of G.
I did also find a so called pocket trumpet on a second hand market stall in Switzerland during a holiday there. It doesn't play, it is an Indian made brass ornament stamped with the name Besson and son London. Bringing it back into the UK was possible the first time it had ever been near London.
