Guys, Yesterday I was writing a number that had a lot of 'Whole notes' (semi-breves)....tied over on to the first 1/4 note (crotchet) of the next bar. Displayed fine....but when I tried to insert notation on the remaining 3 beats of that bar........my 'tie' disapeared & was replaced by a 1/4 beat rest on the first beat of the 2nd bar! I managed to complete the music by using "Staff notation mode" & saving....but today...the problem remains. I've tried 'return to factory settings'....it has not helped. I can't think what I've done that could have caused this.........(but knowing my past history...it's probably something REALLY simple!). Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks, Joe G.

Have you tried turning off "Clean Notation" in the Notation Options?

Might do the trick.

Mac, Sorry...that doesn't work either! I've experimented & the error only occurs when I'm making a 'tie' from a WHOLE note on to the next bar.It doesn't happen when I tie over a 1/4 note or 1/2 note. I hope someone has an answer! Joe G.

Try using Piano Roll editor?

Hi Joe,

This is a strange one and I see you are refering to the display - but - if you change the Editable Notation Page to triplet resolution it works ok

Thanks Rachael. I had already used piano roll mode to write one of the numbers. But I wondered why my editable notation wasn't working. Regards, Joe G.

It seems like BIAB uses the 'feel' of the style to determine how it displays certain notes. I've found that if the notes not precisely entered, you may get triplets displaying where eighth notes were entered. Toggling the triplet resolution works for me sometimes but the best way is to make sure your notes entered are, in fact, the note duration you want. This is especially true when entering notes from a keyboard. Most of my song melodies were entered using a keyboard and I have been cleaning up the durations using the Piano Roll editor. Most of the times the notes displayed were correct but the editor shows the discrepancies in duration. Once I clean up the durations, the notation is perfect. There probably is an easier way and I am open for input.

Why the editable notation does not work properly is a mystery to me too.

Rachael

Jazzman, No...it wasn't only the display......it actually deleted my first note in the 2nd. bar. I had to resort to other means of wring & save. BUT.....your suggestion of changing to triplet resolution seems to work!! Maybe someone will have an explanation (that I can understand!) for this? Many thanks Jazzman. Joe G.

It's likely some algorithmic thang. Entering a new note, the note length of the previous note seems to get shortened by some percentage - which shortens a whole note by a larger absolute amount than a half note, say. Thus keeping the tie with half notes and jettisons the tie with whole notes.

You may easily keep your ties, if you enter s.th. like '90' into the field 'Duration%' of the dialog "Notation Window Options/More -> Other Notation Options/Inserted Note Defaults".

Hi Martin,

That's a great observation and changing the % to 90 made it work

Thanks for that

I'm glad someone thought to mention the Swing or Triplet resolution because the quaver was staying put here when I tried it...

Would not have thought of that right away if at all, but most of my work is done in that resolution, matter of fact I can't remember the last time I switched to Straight feel.

Good call.

White out and a pen. LOL

Rule #1 Drop the tie!

The wife can pass out cause she won't do that, and it might bend the flute.

I put in an upside down caret and drop the tie with white out, makes her happier.
