I was just wondering, what's the best way? I am writing some text about music and I will want to express chord symbols, maybe put in a line of music
You can sort of patch something together, use a lower case b for a flat and so forth, but its not really correct, besides what if you want to write C major as C and then a triangle? You can go fishing about in Webdings and occasionally find a symbol that is coincidentally compatible. You can go and search Godle and find fonts with bits and pieces that may be handy 'brass band font', 'Lassus' , 'Figured Bass Font'
Sometimes I use Cubase's Notation software, then use the Windows accessory Snip Tool, to paste the staff or something as a text.
This will do, but its not really a good way to work
I was wondering how do the Pro's do this?

Well I'm certainly no "Pro", but I feel your pain. I've run into the same problem (sort of) in putting a song into a MSWord file, with just the words and the chord names (C, F, G7 etc.).
When I want to enter a guitar chord SYMBOL (I assume that's what you are referring to), I use a font called PCStrum that has a good selection of symbols. And I managed to get a "cheat sheet" (from somewhere) showing the chord names for each of the symbols.
You can also use fonts FRETSA, FRETSB and FRETSC if you can't find what you're looking for in PCStrum, although you have to go searching for the correct symbol. All of these should be available for free, online.
Also, the fonts that PGMusic supplies with BIAB should be helpful. I found 6 True Type fonts that start with "PG" in my C:\Windows\Fonts folder.
Good luck! LLOYD S

A couple of years ago I collected all my fonts in related documents to show which keystroke results in which glyph. Hier is my document "Notensatzschriften" i.e. musical notation fonts: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/37640589/03%20Notensatzschriften.pdfUsing these in a word processor? All are not very satisfying, neither in comfortable setting music nor in the result. Guido

I have tried some of these, they are all bits and pieces and are no way comprehensive. Surely there is a professional way, maybe its Quark or something? How do pros set this type of thing up when printing for a book? Even when you have installed these fonts how the hell do you find out which key to press for each symbol? Haven't yet found a font that can handle a Jazz chord symbol. Maybe there is a way to 'rob' Band in a Box?
Thanks for the input, but I think there must be something better, some better way of working....

Jazzmandan:
Yes that's certainly more like what I mean. I have downloaded the program trial, and managed to get a staff with a few notes and a chord symbol into Word as a Word Object. The program looks powerful.
Its slightly old school (like another product you know), but there is plenty going on, well worth a dabble.
Downside is the price though $99 - not cheap.
Maestro is certainly good, is it the one pro's use, well I don't know

Save the music file as a picture. Import the picture into Word. Yes this works Matt, but its faffing around (faffing UK = rummaging) it would be hard to keep consistency of presentation this way.

That depends on the notation software and how it saves to an image format. I've used this method to make a booklet with notation examples. Nothing inconsistent about it.

Thank you for your suggestion Matt. What I am seeking is not just putting in a staff, but also putting in Chord symbols, including things like a triangle for a major, a half diminished symbol, perhaps sometimes a clef without a staff, just random use of bits of notation. The symbols palettes cover some of these in some ways, only. Last time I used Sibelius (5) it could not do this, commonly I use Cubase 7 notation (which is powerful).. You can grab anything as a Snip of course.

One more to try. Look for the download of Musedit. This acts like a word processor since it permits text to be integrated into the musical symbols. It too is old school, but it is free. I used it back in the day and it was unique in its features.
It claims to: acts like a "word-processor for music", with a system of keyboard shortcuts and a “symbols toolbox” allowing music and text to be entered quickly and easily. Many functions (including note spacing) are under full manual control rather than being automated. Operations such as select, copy, cut and paste etc. are analogous to those of a standard word-processor.

JMD, This looks like at minimum, to be an excellent utility tool to use with our other works. http://musedit.software.informer.com/+1 on the idea.

. In BiaB:
From any notation screen, hit the "Print" button, then "OK PREVIEW".
On the next screen, the "Save" or "Save++" commands will enable you to save your notation as a JPG or other graphic format. You can then import the graphic into your word file.
For more control in Word, try creating a text box, then importing the music graphic into the text box.
