Although I have used BIAB for many years I just recently midied up my RD 700 sx. The sounds are as good overall as any I have heard for GM. I found instrument files for the 700 and 700gx for both Sonar and for BIAB but none for the SX. Does anyone know of a file for 700SX? The 700 file is close within Sonar but some are wrong If I can't find one I may have to write my own. Couldn't tell from the online tutrial how complicated and time consuming this may be? Will the existing 700 Sonar file be helpful for writing a BIAB pat file?

Does amy know how Bandstand or Garritan Jazz and Big Band compare with the RD 700 - I know we are comparing apples and oranges. It would be nice to have the GM quality of the Roland with the speed of rendering with a DXi.

Looks like the RD 700 is perfect for live or studio work but very time consumimg for rendering finsihed files? I assume to render you must first record the mdi to audio?

With Real Drums and Dimension sound quality has improved greatly but I am still missing a few favorite sounds avaialable on the RD 700sx.

Have you checked that there isn't a patch map for BIAB already made? I'll check after I post this.

______________________________________________________________
EDIT: There is a patch map already made for the Roland RD 700, if that's the same thing as the 700 sx. Go here: http://www.pgmusic.com/support_miscellaneous.htm

You can convert the SONAR .INS file in BIAB. This is from the BIAB help:

Convert Synthesizer Patch List

Convert patch lists from PowerTracks Pro Audio or Cakewalk to make synthesizer patch file lists (.PAT files) easily.

Band-in-a-Box can now read a patch file list generated by PowerTracks Pro Audio or Cakewalk, and convert it to a .PAT file for use in Band-in-a-Box. The patch file contains the name and numbers for all patches on a synthesizer, so that you can access your patches easily by name. If you already have a patch list for your synthesizer from one of these other programs, you can now convert it to Band-in-a-Box format easily.

Converting PowerTracks patch list to Band-in-a-Box .Pat files.
PowerTracks stores its patch lists in a single file, called PATCHES.INI. This file contains all of the patch lists for the synths supported by PowerTracks. Band-in-a-Box stores the patch list for each synth in a separate file, with an extension of .PAT.

To convert a PowerTracks patch file to a Band-in-a-Box Patch file, you will be choosing the c:\pt\ptw\patches.ini, and then choosing the synth that you want to convert to a .PAT file.

Press the Higher Banks button at the top right of the BB screen. Press the [Open INI/INS…] button.

Choose the file c:\pt\patches.INI.

You’ll then see a menu of synths stored in the patches.INI file. Select one to convert.

Create a name for the .PAT file (e.g. My Patch List.PAT) and save it to c:\bb.

Converting a Cakewalk .Ins file to a Band-in-a-Box .Pat file.

This is done using the same process described above for PowerTracks, except that you open the individual .INS file instead of a PATCHES.INI file. For example, if you have a Cakewalk file called "My Synth.INS" you would select this file name. You would then save that converted list to c:\bb\My Synth.PAT.

Thanks Matt,

I appreciate the quick response - the support for BIAB is excellent thanks to guys like you.

I have already spent several hours searching for the Roland RD 700 SX files and found the one for the older model 700. It is close but not quite right because instruments were added and improved in the newer SX.

I may need to learn how to edit the files - if I can do this with aid of the manual it may save time in the long run. It is great that once I get it done I can use it with 3 separate programs with the editing you noted. I imagine I just need to add/edit the new sounds available in the 700sx that were not present in the 700. If I get it working I will post the file for others.

BTW - Love your latin jazz samples previously posted. Latin jazz is one of my favorite styles.

A while ago I downloaded the RD file hosted here at PG Music and modified it to suit my 700GX. You are welcome to a copy if you think it would be useful (PM me your e.mail and I'll attach it to a reply). It took me a while to modify the original, but now it works great in BIAB. Only thing is, for the higher bank patches they appear in a list as opposed to catagorised in a drop-down, though this is not much of an inconvenience really.

You mentioned Dimension earlier: have you got this working with BIAB? I also use Sonar 7 PE which includes Dimension LE, but I haven't really tried to get it working in BIAB. Presently I am using TTS-1 in BIAB as my GX is with Roland for a some warranty work, and would be interested in getting Dimension LE into BIAB if that is possible.

Though the higher bank patches on the new RD's are of great quality, they are quite limited in number.

I used Dimension with BIAB when I wanted just one sound. Example - use the Dimension Accoustic Bass with real piano, drums etc. Sometimes the tempos aren't right for the real style basses or the playing is too busy or just too far out. The quality of the Dimension basses, pianos and others are great. It seems like some of the midi written parts are more predictable than the "real thing". I use the dimension bass frequently where I want a predictable bass part to sing against (I am jazz oriented). With all of the real tracks available try out Dimension (I have pro) - it works great with BIAB (for one voice).

Dimension can play four sounds at once but I felt that it was more trouble than it is worth with BIAB for more than one voice. If you need a lot of voices use Real Band or Sonar. TTS-1 was my favorite for BIAB but the RD 700 blows it away. I plan to use the Roland 700 SX for auditiong new charts, then exporting to Sonar producer to pick my favorites between Dimension and RD700. The RD 700 sx basses, drums, vocal sounds are first rate. We have used The RD 700 series in clubs/live gigs for years - hard to beat. As for higher patches the RD 700Sx has over 400 instruments/variations.

My problem is now getting any patch map working with the Roland. I downloaded the patch map and put it in the directory but BIAb does not see it as a synth???

Would like a copy of your file - will PM when I figure that out.

Any ideas?

Thanks

dpresley, thanks for the kind words about my music; appreciate it.

I've made several patch maps for Roland synths over the years just by editing an earlier model's patch map, and it isn't difficult, just time consuming. I find it surprising that Roland would make changes rather than additions, since you say some of the 700 patches are "wrong". Nevertheless, you should be able to make your own by some editing in Notepad using the data from the patch map in the back of your Roland manual. Then send it to PG Music where they can post it for others.

We cross posted.

Just checking the most obvious: In BIAB, did you click on the plus sign (where you select higher patches) and then Open the .PAT file? Is your .PAT file in the \BB folder?

Thanks again - it now works although not as I expected. I thought I could just select the synth like in Sonar but this works fine.

Yes, I use SONAR too, and it is handled differently.

I also see Andrew from PG Music gave you the same answer in the other thread. Glad you're all set.
