I am using Biab at a very basic level for practicing guitar and mandolin. I have downloaded numerous Biab music files or in some cases MIDI files and I have learned to apply styles and real tracks to them, and with that all is mostly well. The last step I would like to learn is this: Many of the songs I have include instrument parts that I don't want to use/hear. For example a number of bluegrass tracks I am practicing simply with a guitar and bass backing, but the song or style is applying drums and in some cases other instruments. I know I can mute everything but the instruments that I want to hear, but that means I have to tweak everything each time I load the song into Biab. What do I need to learn to edit so that I can permanently remove unwanted parts? Is this specific to the style? I am using a licensed version of BiaB 2008.5.

Any direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

Use File - Save Song With Patches and Harmony
In that dialog, just de-select any part you don't want to hear in future and save it that way.

Hi sealcove,

I have found the best way is to import the Midi file into Realband or the previous PowerTracks audio and do the muting etc in there and then either use the new saved Midfi file in RealBand or take it into BIAB

(Edit) Larry has stated above what to do with a BIAB song file

EDIT: That does not seem to be working for me. When I use save song with patches and harmony, select only bass and guitar, and un-select everything else, the saved song still loads with drums and piano active.

This is not the simplest method, but think of it as an exercise in creating Hybrid Styles.

Note the names of the Styles you are using now. Open a blank Style and import the parts you want from those Styles. Save what you have created with a new Style name. Rock (or, in your case, bluegrass) on.

It is both more and less complicated than it sounds, but worth the effort.

When you have the song edited down to only the instruments you want, use the Save w/Patches & Harmony option and make sure ALL instruments are checked, and also be sure to check all of the check boxes in the upper right of the dialog box (Volume, Pan, etc.) before saving it. I usually do this with the song playing so that I am sure I haven't accidentally regenerated it without first saving it.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I think I understand both the save w/ patches option now as well as importing the parts I want into a blank style.

The only reason I can think of for that is that the unwanted other sounds are coming from a source other than the BiaB style.

You may be playing Realband instruments, which lead their own lives. Or perhaps you have imported a MIDI file. That too plays as an independent thing, unaffected by style settings.

Later, you say you have understood things, so I hope it's all right now.

Don't know if this will help, but I put my initials after anything I've edited, and it prevents me opening the original again.

Can't you just right click and mute the tracks you do not want? Then save it that way?
