"Here's the thing about Mastering that many don't really want to get: Each new song is a new Mastering project that must be taken on its own merit or lack thereof"

true-
and yet still taking into consideration the rest of the songs in the project, so in the end they are a cohesive collection that flows ...

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

That is assuming you are mastering for a complation such as the album, rharv.

Mastering for singles has been around a long time. And is likely the more difficult task because of it.

To the young folks who've always lived in the digital age Mastering is hard to grasp. If you have the tools and the skills Mastering really is not a required extra step. The reason being is that you are recording in the same medium that the final product will be. Remember in the olden days ( we won't talk about when you recorded direct to the cutting lathe ) all recording was done to tape whether 1 or 24 tracks it was still tape. We listened to records. These two formats had entirely different characteristics. It was the Mastering Engineers job to get the material from tape to the Master disc for replication without altering the material.

30 years ago I worked for CBS Records in Haarlem, NL. It was my job to listen to the master tape and then listen to the cassettes produced from it to check that the same sound quality had transferred and that the cassettes started and stopped at the right place. If you ever remember hearing a dull drone of a sound at the start or end of a casette, it was a failure. Of course, I got to sing along with the tracks too and was often told I should be a recording artist and not a sound control guy.

Two articles on mastering with "Audacity" and the LADSPA plug-ins can be found in our little e-zine at Kara-Moon. I wrote them with "mastering on a budget" in mind. Download the PDF file, scroll down, and click on the Repo Audio articles, here:

I clicked on your link, but did not find a PDF file or any link labeled "REPO AUDIO"... all I found was a guestbook page. Is it necessary to be signed in to see these things?
