"" Already have the sheet music (Omnibook), wanna get it into BIAB. Any ideas? ""

Yes. There are BB files out there (look in Yahoo groups, or Allanah's files, and in "Realbook" directories for BB, and you will find Omnibook transcriptions for BB, WITH the solos already entered. Sorry don't have time right now to do the research (which songs, etc., but with a little digging, you'll find them. The heavy lifting has already been done.)

Good Groovin' High.

I just did a quick Google search using the phrase "Charlie Parker solo transcriptions" and a gazillion sites came up. Here's one that includes a pdf of the chart
Jazz Education
Since that's what you're looking for I know these are readily available on various freebie midi and Biab sites because I have some of them and I think one of them is Cherokee. The problem is of course, these midi files are just compilations that different people put together, there's tons of misnamed duplicates, some sound like crap, some the transcription is wrong. They're not organized in such a way you can simply search for the ones that have the actual solo, usually it's the song title or artist only. You just have to use your ears. As I said earlier, I only keep the good ones. I'll see if I can dig some up over the weekend and get back to you. Otherwise books with all his stuff are easily available too for 20-30 bucks or so. Every horn player I know here in LA has his dog eared Parker book. I'm more of a Jimmy Smith B3 player so I never learned Parker's licks I have enough fun learning Jimmy's licks.

I, too, have been faced with the problem of having melodies in songs. I bought Notes Norton's Ultimate Jazz Fake Book song set. None of these have melodies. This was fine for me, but my wife wanted them so I just input from the book. This task is not as daunting as you might think once you get the hang of it. I use cut and paste alot. The melody ( and I make it almost faint) can be helpful if you happen to get lost for whatever reason. Like Brad says there are lots of BB songs out there. I search for midi files, too, and if I want just the melody, I bring it into Sibelius or PowerTracks and isolate it by deleted all of the other non-melody tracks. There are a number of different ways to reach your goal so it's nice that you have some choices.

The problem with the melodies is the copyright. You can publish all the chord changes and arrangements you want but not the melodies without permission. Putting a tune, midi file, chord chart or anything like that up on a website is called Digital Publishing if it includes the melody and it doesn't matter if it's for money or not. Legally you don't have the right to do anything with it except listen to it yourself. As soon as your website goes commercial and visible you have to pull any stuff that has the melodies in it or you'll start getting cease and desist orders. There's still plenty of websites that have these files with the melodies because most of them are just personal non-commercial sites that nobody knows about except through forums like this one and they are usually either left alone or just not found. Still illegal but it doesn't seem to be a big deal. Could become a big deal any time though.

1. Get a notation software program. There are free ones--maybe Noteworthy? I use Sibelius and there is also Finale. A shorter and cheaper version is PrintMusic ($49?). You can transpose and print from these pgms.
<snip>

Actually, Noteworthy Composer costs $49 US - there is a demo available but it has some limitations built in. It is definitely worth a look, I've tried pretty much all the notation programs out there at one time or another, and while NWC doesn't have some of the nice bells and whistles, it most definitely has the best user interface. So good that I just don't bother with the others, too slow and restrictive to use in comparison with NWC.

They also have a very good forum too.

Thanks Lawrie. I hope this info will be useful to the OP. Since I've already plunked down the bucks, I'm sticking with Sibelius for now. Actually I got a good deal when I bought it. The main problem I've found with all of these music programs is just getting used to their peculiarities. I think there are some free notation pgms out there though.

G'day Stan,
as with most things, the best one is usually the one you're used to. Most of the freebie's I've seen are either too limited in their features, a pain to use (E.G. Lilypond - which gives very good results), or both...

My intro to NWC was a demo of v1 in about 2001. Didn't take long to learn the UI and went on. Once I started feeling the limitations I looked for other products (price wasn't that much of an object at the time) but found that after the ease and speed of the NWC UI that other products just didn't stand up. In the end I bought a licence for NWC 1.75, got on the V2 beta team and haven't looked back. V2 is now shipping and I am looking forward to a V3 beta program 'cos I want on!

Like PGMusic, NWC are very responsive to users and have a very helpful and friendly forum. Even during the beta phase of V2 I only once had a crash that could be attributed to NWC - not a bad track record!

I guess I could be accused of being a fanatic about NWC, but I do like it.

$49 is really very cheap for a good notation program. I guess I'm stuck with the old cliche', "The enemy you know is better than the one you don't know."

I went into my midi directory and I did find a bunch of good ones that sound like exact transcriptions to me. The thing is all the different websites I got these from don't tell you where they came from or who did it so I have no idea if they are truly transcriptions or just good solos that somebody recorded. Still, I'm pretty sure that some of them like Billies Bounce and Cherokee are transcriptions, they just have that sound. Others like the ones by Doug McKenzie are him playing a fantastic solo himself. He's a member here but I haven't seen him for some time now. Awesome player from Australia. Actually you can google him up, he has a website with a bunch of Biab and midi files on it. You can find him on youtube too. For learning purposes, who cares if it's a transcription or not, good is good. If you or anyone else would like these files, pm me and I'll email them to you.
