I have discovered Biab copies program change data in its midi files because when I import them into Cakewalk and I go to use my M1 in multimode regardless of whether I can get the instrument to play. What ever sound I have selected reverts to some strange default program change so I am thinking that Biab installs program changes in its sequences. Is this correct and how do I check to see what channels program changes are listed as being.
Am I making this more complicated then it is or is this real stuff. I can't get the M1 legacy to keep any instruments I pick regardless of what channels they are on.
If I am misunderstanding something please explain it thanks.

If program changes were not contained in the MIDI file, how would a MIDI file player know which instruments to use? You should be able to strip these out in an event list editor, but yes, there will be various CC's in the MIDI file.

Thank you for your service. I looked at my event list and on Track 1 when I import it into x3 in the event list it lists 123 All notes off then it resets the instrument back to some crazy patch change. Should I take out 123 Below that is an 04 04 use foot pedal (sustain) I don't see any program change but if while the song is playing I change the patch it will stay there throughout the song but when I reset it back it constantly goes to an undesired program change. Should I remove the 123 would that do that or should I remove all the controller information. could the sustain pedal influence patch changes.
Also on the M1 I am using the multimode but this problem seems to persist on any of the modes not just that one. I tried loading an individual M1 per track and experienced the same shifting and each track shifts to a different undesired patch change.

Yes, as JFord mentioned, the problem you are seeing is caused by Sysex and Program Changes (CC's) in the midi file themselves and not from your DAW. Your DAW is just processing the code that's there and is sending this to your M1 which is executing the instructions. This is a common problem with downloaded midi files. The way I resolve this is to delete any Sysex and CC's that are associated with patch changes. Look for CC's that are associated with program changes, such as 0, 32 and Program Change (PC). These are usually group together in the midi event editor and might be listed as follows: CC0=63 CC32=2 PC=4 Removing these will allow you to assign specific patches to each track. When you save the file, either using RB or Sonar, the DAW will remember the patches that you select. Patch selection is easiest if you use a "patch list" specific to your M1. That way you can assign the needed patch directly from inside your DAW. There is a Korg M1 patch list located here on the PG website: http://www.pgmusic.com/support_miscellaneous.htmJeff

How do you know what sysex is being sent are the Biab styles and demo laced with sound canvas syntax? I have encountered this facing the korg wavestation as well. Could it be that Roland, Korg and Yamaha used different midi formats? Or is that a rumour about there being some incompatibility manufacture specification quirks? I have now tried exporting midi with several Korg synths and encountered the same issues. I think I'll try this into Realband see if it is a smoother process. Realband is a Rhythm sequencer while Sonar is a musical store of instruments and is basically buying a music store that is why I try to make my final output in Sonar x3 producer
