I just tried to use the chordbuilder dialog with a Realstyle and found that I could couldn't get it to 'sound' the chords for me when I pressed the 'Play' button. This is because it uses the Midi voice that the 'Piano' instrument is currently set to in order to play the preview chord. If the Piano channel is set to play a realtrack then nothing sounds.
Is there any way to get the chord to preview using a default voice if the piano channel is set to a Realtrack? If not, could PG consider this as a potential feature for the next version of BIAB?

Are you sure the RealTrack is causing no sound in the chord builder?
Try a style that does not use RealTracks, and see if you have the same problem. The chord builder uses the MIDI output driver (not the DXi Synth, if you are using that for playback). If you still cannot hear anything when using a normal MIDI style, then check which MIDI output driver you are using.
If it is Microsoft GS Wavetable and you are using Windows XP, then the volume might have been shut off in Windows. Click on Start | All Programs | Accessories | Entertainment | Volume Control and check all the levels.

Thanks for the suggestion - I think that you may have something here. I do have the Microsoft GS synth set as my default midi (as opposed to DXi) synth, and the chordbuilder is not working even on all midi styles.
However, when I go to All Programs/Accessories/entertainment/Volume I am getting an error regarding the realtek sound hardware. I think that this is my PCs onboard soundchip which may have been disabled by the engineer who set up my system (I have an external firewire MOTU 828 card).
BIAB is crashing when I try and play with the assignment of the midi synth (perhaps because I have the DXi option selected). I am keen not to destabilise my setup so I will probably leave this one alone.
It may still be an issue where a realtrack 'piano' track is selected though - I just can prove it on my setup.
The ideal solution would be for a back-up default chord to sound from the default installed synth(be it midi, DXi, or VSTi).
Thanks to Peter also for offering to look at this - this would be much appreciated.

If the RealTek chip is disabled in the BIOS, its driver should not show up in the Control Panel (but it might if Windows was installed before the hardware was disabled.) You should remove the driver via Control Panel if you are not going to use it.

The chord builder requires that you have a functioning MIDI driver selected (ie one separate from the DXi/VST driver).
If you click on the piano on the main screen, you should hear a sound if the driver is working.
If you can't get a MIDI driver to work, the only solution would be to switch to ASIO, and make sure ASIO always on is always selected.

I have switched to the ASIO driver and also had to switch my midi output driver from the Microsoft GS synth to the Roland VSC Midi synth but the chord builder now works a treat - even with a realstyle on the piano track.

Just a tip: You can avoid these crashes if you Open Band-in-a-Box and go change your MIDI and audio settings BEFORE you hit Play. If anything has played already, the program is much more likely to crash (especially if using an ASIO driver).
