Would someone like to lend me a hand in editing a track? I recorded my friend singing and I want to enhance it. It was recorded in the most amateurish way possible, so it sounds awful. I thought there was too much bass overall, it all sounded muffled so I pushed it the other way with filters, but I'm not happy with the result. I have at least three problems: 1) I couldn't enhance the voice much. I wish I could bring it out more. 2) The overall tone seems a bit too bright. 3) The floor noise got enhanced with everything else. Dammit. Normally I'd suggest isolating the vocals with a band pass filter or combination or low pass/high pass. But in this case, the vocal is really too far back to enhance - all it ends up doing is bringing up the guitar (which you already noted). My only suggestion would be to try overdubbing to vocal. How good are you at imitating your friend?

Gave it a shot also. But the Guitar is all over frequency range and the vocals are buried way too deep for me.

Hmmmm
I think you might need a miracle instead of a trick to resolve this.
Any chance it could be re-recorded? I really think you need to re-record the vocals, or at least position the mic to better capture the vocals out front. I doubt you could improve them much in the existing recording and keep the guitar out of the way at the same time.

I know the recording is bad to begin with and there is only so much one can do with it, but perhaps I could learn some nice trick here. I listened to several seconds of each and then jumped to the vox and listened of a few seconds. The old computer term GIGO (garbage in/garbage out) seems appropriate. Yeah, there are no "tricks" that I'm aware of that will let you fix this to where it sounds good. If you have recorded the tracks together and done so in a poor manner, there is no rescue possible. You MUST always start with the absolute best tracks you can. I've had some folks send me tracks that sound like that, and ask me to "fix" them and add my instruments so it "sounds good". One lady sent me a vocal track that was not recorded to pitch, or a click, and recorded with a cheap dynamic mic with tons of hollow room sound. I refused the job. She wanted me to put the instruments to it. My advice to her was the same advice I give to you now regarding this. Record it again, and this time, pay attention to the details. Having said that, there are some software packages that allow you to remove things from the mix. I have not heard anything spectacular about these. Melodyne can do this to some degree in the poly mode. I have used ME for this and it works OK with small things. I've never used it to remove or attempt to remove an entire guitar track from a mixed track. Obviously, the more stuff in the mix the harder it is.It would be a chore to do this cleanly. There's another program that came out a year or two ago more specifically designed for this job. However, that assumes that you have good underlying tracks to start with. In your case, with this song, it would be best to start from scratch and record it again, this time, doing it right. Just a side note here..... I never worry about trying to preserve an older recording that sounds bad.....if I like the song, I approach it from square one and 99% of the time, it turns out so much better than it would if I had tried what you are wanting to do. Just start from scratch and rework the song.

Put your energy into recording it again with better mike placement

Thanks, guys. I thought that my incompetence might be the only obstacle in this enterprise, but it seems it's not the case. No problem. There will be other takes. I'll try something different next time, like using the console rather than a bare naked ambient recorder.

Do you have RealBand? If so on one track record the guitar only, that is do not sing. After it is recorded play it back while recording only the singer, that is do not play the guitar. This will keep both parts totally seperate for adding effects, mixing etc.
If you do not have an audio interface you can use your computer mic input. This is not the best option but it should be better than you have now if you follow the above recording method.
You will also need a set of headphones as you have to turn off your speakers while recording the vocal, otherwise you will also re-record the guitar coming out of the speakers.

Yes, I know that. I was in fact looking forward to buying a multitrack recorder, at least a portable one like the Zoom H(xy) series. But my budget is too tight for that right now.
Besides, this is part of my rehearsal band. I think I should just record it in one channel, as a jam session, because that's what it's going to sound like when it's time for us to perform for an audience.

Mission Impossible. Nope. Should one agree to accept the assignment, here's one trick that will do it. Isolating a single voice Demonstation -HERE- Unfortunately, isolating your song's recorded vocal would also require additional setup and equipment. And, even more processing and equipment to have the fidelity to be acceptable for your song. Not sure if your recording will be worth the expense of purchasing one of these units. I have not seen the unit 'Wired' reviewed in this article back in 2010 but this technology goes back further than 2010. I have been exposed to home-brew versions and they work effectively. Even if your vocal is "enhanced" the fidelity will more than likely, no probable, be unacceptable to be used in a song.
