Hi biab fans, The window just to the right of where the `number of choruses' box appears, what is it called please and can I edit the color of the background or the text?

Am I the only 70 year old person that notices how very clear the black numbers in the white `choruses number' window are and how very nearly invisible the white letters are on a light blue field?

I will finish in the `what could you possibly be thinking area'

Thanks for your time

Ron

Hi Ron

Presumably you are referring to the one shown in the first image below.

I don't think the color can be changed, but what came up in a recent post is that you can select the chord in the Chord Sheet and press Control<F2> and edit the value directly from there (see second image). Press Enter when edited / entered value is complete.

(Incidentally, I agree that the contrast in the current chord box is not ideal... Hint)

I just ignore it because it has such bad contrast. you do have to wonder who thought that was a good color combo though! laugh

? What ?

I don't know that it has a name. What it does have is comments about its placement, size, and now color/contrast. For something that some folks here did not know existed, it doesn't seem to have many fans.

As long as we're on this subject, I'll add a suggestion. In a perfect world, I would like BIAB to behave more like, say, Microsoft Word and flag a chord that is typed wrong or especially a chord type that is not supported, rather than have the full entry just disappear. Then going into an edit mode would make more sense, as I could fix the chord rather than just re type it and hope I got it right. The perfect functionality might be like my iPhone, with artificial intelligence suggestions for chords as I type.

Here are some examples how this new chord editor window might work:

I type FMa and it underlines in red, and presents F, FMaj7, FMaj9, FMaj9#11etc.

I type FBaj7 and press Enter, and it underlines in red, giving me an opportunity to be edited. It could say, "Chord type not supported" and even give me some suggestions I could click on to fix the entry.

I type FMaj7#11 and press Enter. It would underline in red, say the chord is constructed correctly but is a chord type not supported by BIAB. It would not only suggest FMaj9#11, but also put up a green message about creating a chord shortcut that would make this replacement automatic in the future.

And while typing a chord, the editing window to do this is large, centered in the top area of the screen so as not to cover any of the chord sheet, and colored with suitable contrast.

Make sense?

Or better yet, you just see what you are typing in the chord cell while you are typing it, well, in the chord cell (much like in a spreadsheet program).

Yes, that part was assumed, but you're right. I was thinking it might be nice to have the data entry area up above the chord sheet, since we want it larger and perhaps the chord you want to type is already somewhere else; I was thinking the chord sheet should not be obscured in any way.

Here's another example:

I type HMaj7. The new BIAB chord edit window flags it, recognizes the error, and presents a list of the twelve tones I might have meant, even using the key signature to present the proper enharmonic spelling (A# rather than Bb, say).

Now, that's an intelligent editor I could love. But as I say, this is a 'perfect world' suggestion.

Great ideas. Are you heading straight over to the wishlist, or writing to support direct?

I WOULD NOT want that functionality unless it was an option I could turn off.
For me, those "auto complete" functions are simply a nuisance.

I thought I had added the "white letters on a light background" issue to the Wishlist some time ago, but I can't seem to find it.

I like jford's idea of seeing what you type, right in the cell.
If not, then Matt's "warning" or "error" message seems more suitable than just ignoring a wrongly entered chord.

I agree with Matt's suggestion for chord error detection/correction. I also find that chord window to the right of the chorus # window could be better, with more contrast and a larger size.

I agree with Lloyd on this - a feature that you could turn off...

Have to tell you... I'm glad I "flush this out of the bushes" (Ctrl-F2).... I'm in heaven! over having this ability! Who knew???? smile smile

Something to note.... You have to hit the ENTER key after editing a cell (in the new-found edit feature) for the change to "take". If you click on the next cell without hitting ENTER, the change does no happen....

Yes, optional would always be good.

I've asked for the ability to type directly in the cell every year to no avail. I completely agree with Ron, that little box is useless and I don't even try to look at it. I just type what I want by feel and then wait until it shows up in the chord cell to see if I got it right or not.

It's such an obvious thing, there must be some fundamental reason why it can't be changed.

Well That's a bunch of good stuff to digest. I was after seeing what I was entering but it certainly could be right in the chord cell. Thanks for all the great answers everyone. I'm heading over to the request list also. This seeming oversight brings up a subject better addresses in the kicking and screaming area.

Seems to me that if you can hit CTRL-F2 and type in the box directly, why can't you just do it by default?

Also, the color of the entry box at the top needs to be changed. The white text on the off-blue background is very difficult to read. Probably why folks aren't even noticing it on the screen.

Hi John,

I agree.

Also when you have pressed CTRL-F2 it would be nice if you could TAB to the next cell (keeping the CTRL-F2 fuction) to continue chord input.

Of course, if we could just edit in the chord grid, the box above becomes unnecessary.

No it doesn't, that's what we're all complaining about. Are you saying you can read what's in that tiny box easily? All I can say then is good for you, nobody else can.

Being able to edit directly in the chord cells has been a wish list item since I first started posting here. Failing that then make that box twice it's size and change that light blue background.

I can't say I have ever bothered to use it. The chord grid box works just fine; it's bigger; and it's easy to see. I would vote to eliminate the little box altogether as it is just another duplication of function.

I don't use it because I can't see it!

Chord entry is one if not the most important thing one does in BiaB. This input should be emphasized and not hidden in a ultra small dark window.

These are my views and I approve this message.
