Here's the situation.
I have a Carvin BB75 bass I bought in 1997. I love it and don't want to get rid of it. It has a double action truss rod. The bass has only tung oil finish so the weather affects the neck a little and needs tweaking every once in awhile. When I moved to Florida back in 2003 from Maine it needed lots of tweaking. You can feel it coming can't you? Yup I got a little anxious and broke the end off of the adjusting rod. Being a double action the rod is still intact I just can't adjust it. The neck stays pretty good actually. Better then any other bass I've owned so I should just leave it alone. This has been bugging me for 6 years. In order to replace the rod, which can be done according to StuMac, I have to heat off the fret board.
Should I do it?

Erm, I answered the survey question literally (no). Yes, I think it should be done. But unless you are a luthier I think someone else should do it. NOI; I've busted a truss rod myself. Fortunately it was on an instrument that had no great value. I do electric guitar and bass setups (action and intonation) and minor electrical/electronic work (including installing the GK-3 synth pickup on my own axe, which involved tolerances of fractions of a millimeter), and charge for it--but leave any more advanced work involving the wood to a shop.

If you lived near where i am you could swing by Carvin and have them take a look and access it. But if it play alright leave it unitl it gets worse, if it does not play right get 'er done! I'd first ask Carvin what the cost would be even though I could likely tackle the job myself it may not be worth it to do so. You would at least need a good insertable steamer of some sort and they already got at least one...

Neck thru or Bolt-on? If it's bolt-on, Carvin probably still can sell you a neck that would fit your bass (they make great kits for their guitars - you probably already know that). If not, then shop for a luthier. If you can't make headway with Carvin (which I doubt - fine company) then I would ask for a luthier on the fenderforum - where there are boatloads more guitarists and luthiers on hand. www.fenderforum.com and navigate to one of the the repair sections. No harm in going there with your Carvin - it's not an official forum for Fender. Lot's of folks there have products other than Fender. Another place would be the TalkBass forum. http://www.talkbass.com/I would be too nervous to remove the fretboard. At least Good luck oh ambitious one! Edit: just googled - neck thru. Luthier it is if it was me (I forgot to vote)

I have been told by more than a few that Carvin's service is extraordinary.
On top of that, they *may* have developed a bit further on the dual truss-rod design and it might be the case where they can put in something that is a bit better than the original design, too.
You won't know until you ask them.
Poppin' the fingerboard off is one thing.
Refinishing such that nobody knows you were in there is quite another...

When it first happened Carvin wanted in the neighborhood of $500.00 plus all shipping. They weren't going to repair it. They were going to swap out my hardware to a new bass. Same with a couple of luthiers. Expensive. I guess it's a touchy job.
I'll contact them again and see what they say.

Only you can determine if the bass is worth another $500. Just remember that the new bass may NOT play or sound like the current one, i.e. the wood used today may be different in type and/or density that what was used in 1997.
If I read your initial message right the truss rod has been broken for 6 years. If I were in your shoes I would keep playing the Carvin as is but I would start saving for a new bass.
On a side note I played a Carvin double neck (6 & 12) for about 20 years. It was a great guitar. Also I’ve been playing Carvin Amps for about 35 years. They make great equipment.

Yea I got an email from Carvin. They will replace the rod for $350 plus shipping. $500 no matter how you look at it. The thing is the rod itself is not broken just the hex head at the end of the rod. A double action rod is different then a single. I guess I'll just keep playing it as is.

Yeah $500 would keep me from doing anything right now. Course i am the original cheap skate.
I bought my bass guitar at a blow out sale at a local guitar shop for $79 it is a Jazz bass clone.

All things being equal, $350 plus shipping isn't really that bad if it's a neck-thru and they have to remove the fretboard to get at it... Really pretty reasonable. But - you may be able to get that done a lot cheaper locally.
If this is your only bass, and you play out all the time, and you really _really_ need it to be perfect - then by all means have it fixed. If it isn't your main bass, you don't _need_ it fixed, and it is playable without... Keep asking around locally, but don't sweat it too much.

Be real careful with the tung oil if you put more on.
A townhouse condo corp here let condo owners tung oil their front doors, provided them with the oil and cheescloth and rubber gloves with instructions.
Got a call on a Saturday night, the Platoon Chief says they've 2 fires in garages in the same complex in a day and a half. I go look, ask a few questions, both start in garbage cans. Then went door to door. Found 3 more garbage cans overheating, one starting to smoulder, no one home, broke the door open got it out before it caught the plastic can on fire. The cheesecloth soaked with Tung oil was causing spontaneous combustion.
Dangerous stuff if not handled properly, might be worse than linseed oil, the type I put on my axes. (The ones to cut wood, I'm a canuck eh?)

Good suggestion to take it to a good local Luthier for an estimate, I'd add that you should state in front that Carvin wants 350 plus shipping as that may impact the Luthier's estimate in your favor, especially if you let him or her know that you don't need a rush job, just reasonable turnaround time.
Worth the shot either way...

Sign I've seen in some shops: "We can do the job fast, cheap, or well. You can have any two, but not all three." Tell 'em you want it done right inexpensively (i.e., what Mac said).

That's funny. There are a couple I've contacted. I'm waiting back.
Now the truth of the matter. Someone may be able to relate. I'm one of these guys that are NEVER satisfied when I have someone work on anything for me. I learned at a young age to just do it myself. The problem is I ain't young no more. I don't see as sharply as I'd like. I'm not as patient. You know the drill. So........ I mean I broke it because I wasn't patient. I probably just play it the way it is and in another couple years I'll revisit the subject.
