This is a bit of an odd one!

Like of most of you, I guess, I use the style selection window a good deal, for all its limitations ('if feel and tempo match prototype' has such an elastic measure of 'tempo' that it sorts very little, for example). But it hadn't occurred to me that the list/window might not actually include everything......

I've just bought the Jeff Lorber Fusion soloists set, and playing through the demos, I saw it was using FusnGrv1.sty, so it occurred to me to look and see if there was a FusnGrv2.sty. But according to the selection window , and search mechanism, there isn't even a FusnGrv1, even though it's happily playing all the while. So I go looking, and, yes, it's there in the BB folder. So I click the rebuild button on the style selection window, but still it's not 'there', and search still says it finds nothing. And yes, I have checked the obvious things like 'spelling' mistakes, and case.......

I'd appreciate any advice on the mechanics of this, and I'm wondering if there are other styles in my BB file that the style selection is missing.

Best wishes

It may be the case that the style is another one of what pgmusic calls "Utility" styles.

These "Utility" styles are also found in use with other offerings such as the "101" riffs, etc. series as well as a few others.

Typically these "styles" are not complete, in the sense that they may only have the A substyle available, and/or a truncated pattern set, etc.

Good for an example but not so good for rolling an entire song using just that style, I have found a way to use some of them anyway, incorporating the "Change Style at Bar" command:

Locate the style in the User Styles Folder dialog and add them there using the wizard in User Styles.

Don't know specifically about the Jeff Lorber situation you cite, but it is worth a try at your end. If you don't understand what I"m talking about above, let me know and I'll try to delineate what to do a bit better if you need it.

To add to Mac's info, I find that any style representing the "higher letters" of a multistyle (c,d, etc.) won't show in the stylepicker. IOW, if a style name has "+" as the last character before ".sty", then any other style whose name has that "+" replaced with a digit (usually "2") won't compile into the stylepicker, (but will appear in the F9 dialog.) As Mac indicates, they can be added to the stylepicker using the edit interface. I created a sub-category under My Styles called "PG styles that don't compile" or some such.

Mac and Ron
Thanks for your help. No, I see what you're saying, Mac - thro the 'Edit' button ?

But what you both say depends on the user knowing about the missing style in the first place. Ron seems to be saying that are quite a lot that don't compile. My most recent 'rebuild' (2 minutes ago) reported I had 3754 styles compiled, so there must be more than that in the BB folder - it's hardly practical to go through one by one to see if there's something uncompiled that is actually just that groove you've always dreamt of............If there isn't a way of comprehensively compiling the whole set, that sounds like a high priority wishlist item to me ?

I exported my style picker list to a CSV file (which I found I had to tweak to import into Excel properly, because all the style names that start with the equals sign get interpreted as formulas). Anyway, I then created a list of the style files I have in my BIAB folder. I compared the two and found the following files do not display in the style picker list after rebuilding it:

Hi John,

I remember that at the time of the major old style update that happened a year also they were a few things that were wrong then with some names being changed or something which could account for old file names being found but not on BIAB

I remember at one time, there was an issue with the "other styles" category not being picked up completely, but since they fixed this, it would now seem that there is some logic in the program to EXCLUDE certain styles (just like there is logic in the program itself to INCLUDE PGMusic provided styles, or maybe it's related). I would think that these "missing" styles would at least be picked up in the "other styles" category. Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if you explicitly created an LS3 file with those styles listed.

Haven't heard PGMusic chime in on this yet, though.

I used to have a plaque above my desk that said, "I love computers. I can sit and watch them do my work all day long." It had a picture of a guy reclining in his office chair and a printer spitting out reams of output.

Humble pie time: "it's hardly practical to go through one by one to see if there's something uncompiled that is actually just that groove you've always dreamt of."

- except that you did - or at least, the necessary spadework for it ! That is SO helpful !

But it does confirm that there's not just a small 'problem', but a symphonic-sized HOLE in the Style Picker as supplied.

As you said:

"Haven't heard PGMusic chime in on this yet, though. "

I'm listening, too !

Many thanks

Peter has mentioned the "utility" styles thing in the past, matter of fact, that's where I got the name for them, he said pretty much what I wrote up above IIRC.
