Hi people,

I'm on a mission! I want to see how many different styles of song I can write using BIAB, RB, RealDrums and RealTracks. Up until purchasing this software, I couldn't really escape the "ballads" mold of songwriting. I seem to be going to new places now, though

This particular song started out as a 12-bar-blues-based song and developed from there. If you have 2' 46" to spare, I'd really appreciate your thoughts on the mix and the overall sound.

Song: I Was A Clown

The song is entirely BIAB/RB with TC Helicon (in BIAB) for harmony.

Hope you enjoy it!
Noel

Hey Mate. I loved it. I like that bluesy shuffle. Had my toes tapping right along with it. Probably the only thing I would do to the song is change the vocal attack. It sounds like you're singing an alto part throughout the song. Might try adding some pitches to your voice to add more life to it.

The harmony came out very good. TCHelicon?

What bit rate did you use while producing it? It's very tight.

Other than the nitpicking about the voice trail I thought it was outstanding.

I think what Russ is trying to say is that the lead vocal part is a one-note melody in many places.

I'm agreed, you might try to make the melody you sing a bit more interesting than that, if you can.

Other than that, keep on trackin', you've set a lofty goal. You should learn a lot along the way and your songwriting and recording skills should end up in a better place from the endeavors.

Sounds good Noel.....

A cool project as well. I've often thought of doing something similar with style changes, and/or the melodist and/or the soloist. Could be some quite interesting combinations there. Never seem to find the time.

Good lyric, nice groove a little more inflection in the vocal (AKA Mac & Russ above) and it should come together very nicely.

Very good mix.

It's fun working outside our comfort zone isn't it!

BiaB makes it possible to do so easily.

OK, a random thought;
Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?

64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

Thanks everyone for taking the time to have a listen to my song. I really appreciate your comments. When I wrote the melody, I purposefully chose a verse that had very little melodic movement because I wanted the melody in the chorus to stand out more. The reason for this is that I wanted to keep the song within an octave range. In light of your comments, I'll have another look at the melodies.

Russell: The bitrate was CD quality at 44.1 KHz and 16 bits. When I coverted to mp3, I used 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps. When I use the Audio Harmony in BIAB (TC Helicon), I record a vocal track and then run the electronics. I save the audio harmonies as individual tracks and then import them into my DAW. For my final mix, I record a new lead vocal. To my ears, because this second lead vocal is slightly out of time with the harmony based on the original lead vocal, the harmony sounds a little more realistic.

Mac: Thanks for the inspiration. I'm slowly getting better at mixing, etc., but it sure isn't a process that's coming easily to me. This forum and comments from you and the others have really helped a great deal.

toucher: Thanks for your comments and ideas. I hadn't thought about using the Melodist. I've made a note of that

Danny C: Your positive comments made me smile. Thank you.

MarioD: It's a relief to finally be out of my comfort zone! The RealTracks in BIAB are brilliant and there are so many styles. I really want to try the jazz and bossanova RealTracks, now.

RicoRon: Thank you

All the best to you all,
Noel
