Hey guys! Thank you for all your suggestions, we have the problem solved!!

Vista simply wouldn't allow the bbw.exe to be added to the default programs list, for some reason this only happened when installing it on a drive other than the system drive. Jazzman says he has his BiaB installed on his D drive and has no issues with file associations so I can't pin down a reason why both myself and my friend are experiencing the same problem.

Anyway the good news is Lloyd (2nd post) is a genius and the link he provided worked a treat. We used the small program there to force Vista to include BiaB in the default program/open with window. It took a while to locate each of the different file types BiaB uses and then associate them properly but we got there in the end.
