Bingo. Don't try to think this isn't absolutely vital to your friend. He may not think so now because it's so ingrained in him he doesn't even realize it. To him it "just happens". Well, it happens because he learned it at an early age.

Trying to do it now is much more difficult. As school kids they have one job. Learning. That's it. No real job, no family, no lawsuits, no getting laid off and looking for work, none of those things we as adults have to deal with. Not to mention young brains are primed to learn. Old brains not so much. Can it be done, of course because I did it myself. I took and passed a series of very difficult college level tax courses about 5 years ago when I was mid 60's. It wasn't easy but I did it. There's that former NFL player on the news who just got his degree at age 74.

If you really want to learn this stuff I firmly believe you need formal help. Find a good teacher or sign up for a music course at your local community college. Sitting around at home putting in an hour here or there will not do it.
