Certainly part of it is due to the fact that he learned piano at an early age - which I think requires a deeper understanding of chords and harmony than does guitar (I expect some of you to disagree here - that's ok : ) Bingo. Don't try to think this isn't absolutely vital to your friend. He may not think so now because it's so ingrained in him he doesn't even realize it. To him it "just happens". Well, it happens because he learned it at an early age. Trying to do it now is much more difficult. As school kids they have one job. Learning. That's it. No real job, no family, no lawsuits, no getting laid off and looking for work, none of those things we as adults have to deal with. Not to mention young brains are primed to learn. Old brains not so much. Can it be done, of course because I did it myself. I took and passed a series of very difficult college level tax courses about 5 years ago when I was mid 60's. It wasn't easy but I did it. There's that former NFL player on the news who just got his degree at age 74. If you really want to learn this stuff I firmly believe you need formal help. Find a good teacher or sign up for a music course at your local community college. Sitting around at home putting in an hour here or there will not do it. Bob

I was fortunate to learn music at an early age, not from "teachers", but from family. My Dad and all my siblings played musical instruments, as did numerous aunts and uncles. I got a ukulele and a chord book at age 8 and once I'd learned a few chords, I was welcomed to "sit in" on the "jam sessions".
At first there was always someone there shouting out the chords (this was ALL country music). I never knew there was such a thing as I, IV, V. I memorized the 3 chords in each key. I knew that before the band started, they would certainly let everyone know what key they were playing in.
It didn't take long before I "graduated" to a guitar, and only needed someone to yell out the chord if was something other than the 3 in that key.
I never did take any "theory", and there are actually very few times that I wish I had. I've learned to "hear" what chord is coming, similar to what your friend does.
Never had a capo when I was growing up, but I have one handy now, and use it whenever the situation calls for it.
I wish you good luck on your search for "chording nirvana". I suppose we all hope for that.

I had two friends, both brothers, who played in a band together. I was at one of their practices once, when in the middle of the song, Pat (lead guitar) yelled out to John (Drums): "What key is it in?"  That set off a violent brawl, with drums and amps crashing everywhere. Those boys would fight at the drop of a hat. (oops - cliché - sorry!)
