What happens when you check the "Route MIDI Thru..." box below the Use DXi checkbox?

I know that is not what its for, but maybe...

If you have an older BIAB installation disk, you might look on it to see if the older VSC3 install is on there. It is not a DXi synth and it appears in the upper MIDI output window along with the other choices, the sound is only very slightly inferior to the sound of the VSC DXi and might be a solution with MIDIOX and don't overlook that this version can also be run standalone from the taskbar tray.

Your "ultimate" answer though, would be a hardware MIDI synth in the setup. Like the Ketron SD2 Orchestral Wizard. Not only would the current problem be solved, its sound is lightyears out in front of what the VSC is capable of achieving.
