Is anyone using VLC to slow down performance videos on mac Yosemite?

I seem to have limited functionality compared to what I saw on a youtube demo. i.e. can't get tool bar to top of page, cannot move tools from the tools menu to the tool bar. I does seem to slow down but in a a less then practical way. The speeds available are kind of far apart. Perhaps I'm missing something. Looking around at forums for VLC and mac it looks a little like the mac version is less than robust in it's functionality.

btw, the biab version is far worse to work with. Could be me, I need to post about that while I'm here.
