Thanks for the post, I feel it could be an interesting one. I find that I have to avoid over-analyzing my work otherwise I just bog down by getting too picky. If it sounds right then most likely it is. Where I find the analyzing helpful, particularly in the fashion of the "how to listen like a producer" is that if you keep a basic sound map of your work, when you get a sound you love then one can quickly set up to approximate it. Note that I said approximate, because a new project should require slightly different tweeking in order to prevent carbon copy songs.
