Can someone please explain the Style "under the hood" in BiaB when it is predominantly RealTracks and RealDrums (i.e style w/Realtracks).

If you select such a style is there a "mirror" MIDI style running in the background? Why I ask - if you open the BiaB file in Realband, disable eg Realdrums or Piano, you can then generate a MIDI drum or Piano sequence - is this MIDI sequence generated from the "Realtrack style" and is it identical to the selected style? - if not, where does the MIDI sequence come from?

Apologies if my terminology is wanting

RealTracks styles are generally based on pre-existing (or in some cases, newly written) MIDI data. You may notice that some of the RealTracks styles contain the name or a reference to the name of one of the MIDI styles.

The RealTracks Soloist entries are not based on Style files, but on Soloist rules, which are related to the MIDI Soloist rules in many ways, but not to the point of single note selection. Rather, in the case of RealTracks, I'm pretty sure those rules are applied as concerns phrase choices.

When you import into RealBand and then kill all of the RealTracks, the only thing left for generation are the underlying Patterns in the MIDI Style file, which are going to be different from the phrase choices found for RealTracks. Those phrase choices are chosen for their ability to fit over a chosen chord sequence while the Pattern Choices inside the MIDI style are static, with different choices made by weighting and other considerations. I assume that if a certain RealTrack contains loops that could be interchangeable that they too, are subjected to some sort of weighting routine.

I find that rather confusing, Mac. NOI

Let me try - there are 2 types of Styles: MIDI Styles and RealTrack Styles.

MIDI Styles contain all the instruments needed to perform a track using MIDI instruments in a certain pre-selected style - e.g. Jazz Swing

RealTracks Styles are there in the title of the RealTrack and are but one instrument - e.g. Jazz Swing Rythm Guitar 120. These can be used together creating a real personal collection of RealTrack Styles with RealDrums, according to taste

Then again, the RealTracks are now being collated into Style Sets which gather a number of RealTracks together that work well together - e.g. #39, Slow Country

Is that clearer?

Bother! It would be easier to explain the rules of cricket!

The Rules of Cricket

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

A skunk family lived in the woods. There were two little skunk children, one named "In" and one named "Out." Whenever In was in, Out was out, and whenever In was out, Out was in.

One day, Out was in and In was out, and Mama skunk asked Out to go out and bring In in.

Out went out and in short order, he brought In in.

Mama skunk, impressed, asked Out, "Out, how were you able to find In in such a short time?"

Out responded, "In stinked."

Sam doesn't seem to know the difference between a RealTrack and a RealTrack Style.

Open a blank sheet in RB and type in some chords. I want all Real Tracks and Real Drums. I can do 2 things:
1. Load a style that has say RT 1,2,3,4 & RD 1
2. Load RT 1,2,3,4 & RD 1 Individually to tracks without loading any style.

Do you there will be a difference?

Excellent question. I think it goes to the heart of the OPs (and my) interest. My guess: "No." I suspect that, for a RT generation, whatever AI or Expert System rule set is involved, it does not feed on data in the style.

However, the expt suggested by the question could well be indecisive, since it requires two comparative generations, and any random choices made by the AI or rules could well produce differences, even if the style exerts no influence. So I'd have to change my "no" to "no, in principle, but yes in practice."

Would be interested in results if anyone does the comparison.

EDIT - Additional observations (using BB, not RB): With style disabled, you can't generate a RT. Fly in my ointment. However, with the *blank* style enabled, you can generate a RT. Fly backing out of ointment.

This is the RB forum so the enable/disable style doesn't apply.

I don't think there's any difference between RTs that have been generated from generating a style from those generated individually.
