1. Memorize the Chromatic Scale. C, C#, D, D# E, F, F#,G,G#, A, A#, B, C and going downward in this drill, make the sharps the flats for the note above instead, like this, C,B,Bb,A,Ab,G,Gb,F,E,Eb,D,Db,C. Note that there is no E# needed, nor an Fb, same note.

2. The frets on your guitar represent a half step for each fret.

So if the high pitched E string is at E on the nut, it would be an F at the first fret, an F# at the second, and so on.
