Hi all. I've been using BIAB and RealBand for some time though have never realy dived deep into either program. Recently, every time I use RealBand and try to open the Stylepicker I get the "For first time use etc etc.... the Stylepicker needs to rebuild" message.
I get this every time I try to open the Stylepicker window.
Looking back through past messages I see others have had this problem in the past though I didn't find a solution that works for me.
I don't get this problem with BIAB itself.
I am using Windows 10. I am the only person using the pc so my account is an Administrator account. I have also set Realband to open in Administrator mode.
BIAB and Realband are both installed to their default locations on the C drive. I cannot find the file rebuildstylepickerlist.txt, which I have seen previously mentioned anywhere on my system. I have installed all the latest updates.
Setting User Account Control to off makes no difference.
Not being much of a techie I am now totally stumped.
Any ideas will be most welcome!

You might try searching for and renaming these two files in your Realband folder (don't delete them, so you can revert if required)
RB.CFG Realband.ini
Then start Realband, and it will recreate new files.
You'll have to go through and check things like folders settings etc.

Doesn't the software rewrite and make the needed corrections to those 2 files after it rebuilds? I get the same thing every time I want to pick a style, and that was on a brand new fresh installation I got it. And each time since.

If that's still the case, and you have set RB to run as Admin, and UAC is off, and RB is in the default (root) folder, then probably need to report it to Support.

Since you're about to pull your hair out, I'll throw this out there. Because of another program I was running, I found that after I had upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10, Windows 10 changed my access permissions to files in my User folder. The program I was running set its temp folder to "..\Users\MyName\Temp" or something like that; however, it didn't let me save anything there. It was driving me crazy. So I had to go through a whole bunch of folders an take ownership of them (the upgrade had apparently removed or changed my ownership). Once I did that, everything worked fine. I'm just wondering if it's not letting you write to the BB folder, which means you can't reset the "rebuild StyleList" flag. You might want to check your BIAB folder to see if that might be the problem. Here is a short tutorial on doing that. Of course, I would make note of whatever settings are already in place in case you need to go back. However, it worked for me. Just a thought, since nothing else seems to be working.

Guys, I am getting the same condition. And to the replies thus far, I am going to apply my same special brand of tactless commentary, since this is the only way I know to be. I AM working on that with the shrink, but there comes a point....
"RB to run as Admin, and UAC is off, and RB is in the default (root) folder". "Another program...."
Assume if you will that all he did was install 2016. Why would he go to a working computer, suddenly change that ridiculous UAC that Windows has, not install in default directory, not run as admin... and all the other yada yada that might follow, when for the last 97 years he has been doing all those things correctly? Nobody sane makes adjustments to a working system. In my case I run XP, like I have since the day I got RB in like 2008, and I will never upgrade that computer. (Again, why break something by trying to make it mo' bettah?) So given that, how would any of those things mentioned have ever happened? As far as UAC, every installation of any Windows OS always sets that annoying little option to on, and you should know that from owning computers and installing OS. After so many years experience, that is number one on my checklist. "Turn UAC OFF!" Now, that is me and maybe some users actually trust that Micro$oft is user friendly (it is not) and just install and go. Microsoft is a greedy, evil, soulless corporation that wants to take over every thought you have and run your computer life for you.
So now to argue with myself.... If this was a bad bug in RB, everybody would be reporting that their style table rebuilt on every use. I really don't know how something can leave PG without it being installed on computers that have had a fresh OS install to see how the newbie level install (all defaults ON) will affect RB. Maybe they do test that way, but bugs like this make me think they do not.
So to toss my dime on this pile, nothing is different on my studio computer from 2008 running XP (other than newer mobo and CPU, but that has zero to do with software), and where I did not have this issue on 2013 and all I did was install 2016, why do I have it now? I (very reluctantly) relented and did the rename of config files (and we should NEVER have to do that!) and that did nothing for the condition. Now I have question about whether I am seeing all the available styles because where it tells me "This can take up to 5 minutes" it takes 15 seconds. Does that mean it is not regenerating as it should? Can someone tell me "You should have exactly XXXXXX styles with a clean install of 2016" so I know?
And remember, as you read, I am not a mean person. I just have no tact and don't waste life energy worrying about someone else's reading intent or mood into my words. I have no control over the thickness of other's skin or sensitivity level. Only mine. No word in the language has intent or emotion, We assign that when we read or hear it.
Yeah, it gets tiring having to put in that disclaimer, but at 65 it is going to take some time to smooth the rough edges. I started late.

Embarrassingly, immediately after posting the original message I got called abroad (sounds exciting - it wasn't!) to a place where I had no internet access so I've been unable to read or contribute to the posts. Thanks for everyone who has commented. My problem is unresolved. Interestingly I took a Windows 10 laptop with me and put BIAB and Realband on that to have something to amuse myself with when working. Wouldn't you know it: exactly the same problem. Time to raise the issue with support, I guess.

Hi all. Now, it will take greater minds than mine to explain this but
...having totally disabled User Account Control and still having the problem I became unconvinced the issue is anything to do with administrator level access but probably more something like Realband is stuck in a partial, unfinished rebuild of the Stylepicker.
After trying everything else I overwrote Realband 2016 with an installation of Realband 2015. (Just Realband, I left BIAB 2016 untouched). Hey presto, Realband 2015 did a longer rebuild on first opening and then worked fine.
I then upgraded again with a re-installation of Realband 2016 (making sure I installed always as the administrator) and...everything works fine.
User Account Control is still active but I'm running the program as an administrator.

Any suggestions for those of us, like me, who don't have 2015?

Well, I presume it doesn't really matter what earlier version you roll back to, because the updated Stylepicker is only new in 2016. Can you roll back to any earlier version?

Well, I just "dragged & dropped" a copy oy 2015 from an older USB HDD into the 2016 Realband folder. Just overwrote the files that were in there. Ran 2015 (not sure what update - probably didn't matter) 2015 worked fine with the Style Picker. Then re-installed 2016 into same folder over 2015. Everything worked fine.
BTW. Dragging 2016 from the USB Drive into the problematic 2016 folder did not have the same effect as doing the same with 2015.

I think I have 2013 here somewhere but I am not going to bother. I don't have time to be playing around removing and reinstalling TWICE. I will just nag the support people until they fix the bug. And that's not because I want to be a jerk about it. What if Fred from some city in Idaho that hasn't been discovered yet buys this thing as his very first version of the software? Shouldn't it work correctly out of the box for Fred? Fred has no previous version to do this dance with. I just paid $300 for something that doesn't work correctly. That's just wrong. I wouldn't uninstall and reinstall this any more than I would roll back to Windows 98 so I can upgrade to Windows 7. I shouldn't have to. I have emailed support twice about this and have not gotten a reply. I asked "How many styles am I supposed to have, what would the correct directory be and what is the correct size of that directory, and if it says it needs to rebuild and it may take 5 minutes, why does it run like 8 seconds?" Without an answer to the number of styles I am supposed to see listed and the unanswered directory questions, I have no way to know if my software is complete or not. Given that this thing takes like 2 hours to install, I am not going to go through that again when I would need to remove, install 2013, and then install 2016, because as I said, assume this is a brand new first time user installing on a brand new computer. What would THAT guy (Fred) do? After years as an IT pro, I don't do "workaround". I want problems fixed.
I'll email again and hope 3 times is the charm. I am starting to be annoyed at the fact that the sales people are on call 29 hours a day to get my money, but the support people don't answer emails. Tech support has slipped over the last few years. Did PG just get too big?

I absolutely agree with you Eddie.
You shouldn't have to uninstall or rollback or reinstall to resolve this problem.
PGM should be able to identify the cause, and resolve it with a patch. Simple.

Well all I know is that it doesn't take long to install either an earlier patch or for that matter an earlier years RB, I have done it myself many times. Just untick all the stuff in the installer plugins etc, and it only takes a min or so to install the earlier version, then just reinstall the current version of rb again.
If it fixes the problem great, and didn't use up much of my times.
But then again everyone has a different outlook on this, just my opinion.

On some drives you can open it up and check the connection inside. Sometimes the caddy can get jarred loose.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

The status of this is now that PG has intervened and while we can identify that there is a problem there is no resolution via patch yet.
When I plugged in the hard drive (working again) and ran RB from there, I do not get that message. The style picker tells me I have 4,742 styles.
When I run the installed copy, I continue to get the "rebuild" message, and I have 4,741 styles. Since 4,742 does not equal 4,741, apparently RB has a "check the number of styles" function coded into it and when it is not 4,742 you get that message. I am not about to sit and compare the installed copy to the hard drive copy to find one missing style, but that seems to be my issue. The email I have in to them now is asking what I need to copy from the hard drive to the installed version to find that missing style and put an end to that message. If it's one specific folder I can do that easily. If it is individual files I will not likely mess with selecting 4,742 individual files to copy unless they are clearly marked with an extension (like ".sty") and they are easily selected. It would seem like if enough people have the issue, and that "extension method" mentioned above fixes it, it's a simple batch file to write.
copy g:\RealBand\*.sty c:\RealBand /y copy g:\RealBand\*._sty C:\RealBand /y
As long as they are all called something consistent like stylename.sty or stylename._sty that will be a simple thing.
Watch the one I am missing be called stylename.goat and have nothing to do with "sty".... That would be my luck right there!
