Loading some new styles disks recently received, 7 disks to be exact. No problem until the last one. About halfway through I get error messages essentially saying the system cannot write to the PG Ultrapack hard disk. Sounds like this drive has gone sour on me. Appears I have 11.8G available, 62.6G used.
Time to hit Fry's for a new disk? Any recommendations on a rugget one?
Thanks John

It may or may not indicate a failing drive in this case.
More than likely just indicates a drive that has been stuffed to the gills and can take no more.
The disk needs a certain amount of freespace n order to function. You are about at the limits percentage-wise. Actually, with that error message, sounds like you are AT the limit.
Try running Disk Cleanup and then Defrag on it first. This will likely take some time.
Trying to put all of the RealTracks plus program onto the older 80gb USB drive is not recommended, there will be too little free space left for the drive to function properly and that can be a recipe for disaster as well. This is why the new program ships on a 160gb drive instead.
Of course, purchase of a larger capacity USB drive would cure all ills for you.

Thanks Mac - didn't realize the disk size recommendation had grown.
Well, since I'm sure I'll want more and more realtracks, upgrading disk is probably my best option here.

The audiophile version with the new Real Tracks is now nearly 1TB.
John, you asked about rugget (rugged?) hard drives. LaCie brand drives are well regarded in studios I have used.

The thing about LaCie is that they don't make the hard drives, just the fancy cases they go in. My LaCie 250GB hard drive has a Western Digital hard drive in it, but I've heard of others with Maxtor or Seagate in them.

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Gary, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Most of my drives are Western Digital.
Of course, the 'fancy case' is part of the story if you are looking for "rugged" drives, not just ones that won't fail.
As an aside, I started using Western Digital drives decades ago whenever I built computers, and once chosen, I was pretty much locked in because there used to be a recommendation not to mix drive manufacturers. I don't think that is still true, but if anyone knows for sure, I'd appreciate an update.

For every possible brand name, someone will experience a failure.
Without statistical sampling -- properly -- such is merely anecdotal evidence.

One cause for an error like that is insufficient USB power. Make sure that you plug both ends of the Y cable into separate USB ports. Then try some simple copies on the disk, making copies of folders for example.
>>appears I have 11.8G available, 62.6G used. Yes, this should be big enough for everything we've made. It should all fit on your 80GB drive, with about 7GB to spare.
Have Fun! Peter Gannon PG Music Inc.

When copying that much data all at once be wary of heat build up in the drive. Give it a little rest between discs.

Hi John,
Seagate's are very good and they run cool and quiet, I've been running them in servers for years and they have been very reliable. Try to get one in a good aluminum case, it will dissipate heat better. Also if you are using a powered USB 2.0 hub to plug your drives into, you might look into one of those little USB personal desktop fans, plug it into the 2.0 hub and point it at or between the drives if their getting hot.
Warren
