I had my Asus Desktop (that I built) in storage for 3 months because of my house fire. I plugged it in yesterday (not sure I have the right cord) and all it does is beep. The blue light seems to be on the front side of the tower but not sure what the beeping means. I have my monitor connected but the hard drives don't seem to be recognized. I'm hoping I just have the wrong cord attached.
Should I have a cord with a power box attached or just a 3 pronged plug into an outlet.
Servicemaster said all my electronics checked out and should have been working. They delivered them on Friday in a jumbled mess of cords.
I have an Asus M2-NE motherboard.

The beep codes tell us stuff about the PC, things like the monitor or keyboard not plugged in. If the beeping doesn't stop - I.E. a long continuous tone or beeping that simply doesn't stop that indicates that the machine may not be finding its RAM. I would recommend opening the case and reseating the RAM.
Given you had a fire, has the PC had its internals properly cleaned?

The beeps are separate and don't stop. It isn't one long continuous beep.
Ok, I'll redo the connections I already plugged to monitor and keyboard and reset RAM.
They said everything checked out and properly cleaned. I'll ask again tomorrow. I seem to be left with weekends to stress about this stuff.
I do have a backup on an external HD. I hope its a simple fix with connections.
Which parts would likely have sustained smoke damage. Are RAM chips easily damaged? Do they take them out to clean?

Beep codes may give specific hints on what to check on. Good luck.

Most likely RAM (I assume an Award BIOS)

I expect that the RAM reseat should resolve it.

There would be a coating of smoke particles anywhere the smoke managed to reach. As most of the smoke residue will likely be carbon then it would be conductive. Did they check the underside of the motherboard?

I will ask tomorrow about the underside of the motherboard and if they checked that.
Who can give me a rough cost estimate of replacing this entire system if I can't repair. I might just ask my insurance company for about $2,000 to replace. Is that about right for a current build?

Jazzmandan,
Thanks, If I do decide to rebuild and my computer is dead, do you have these components with order numbers and websites that I can just do an easy reorder without going through all the searching and compatibility checking.

Joan, on some ASUS motherboards, you can get an audio description of the error messages through the computer's headphone outlet. Not just a beep, but a .wav file that plays and describes the error.
I know this was a feature of the last desktop machine I built with an ASUS motherboard. Make sure you plug into the headphone outlet that is on the motherboard of the computer.

Whatever you do, don't throw the drives out, they may be just fine and can be installed in a new computer so you can copy the file data on them.

Thanks, I was back at the house late this afternoon. I listened again to the beeps. They are one long two shorts--So is it a display adapter problem (MDA) CGA) Could it mean my monitor has the wrong plugs or not enough plugs. I looked and there is only one plug coming out of the monitor with one other slot of some kind unfilled with anything next to it.

Sounds like a graphics board problem. Reseating the board may help in case of bad contacts; an outright defect board would need replacement.

I had a computer technician come to look at my desktop today. In 5 minutes he was able to take out the battery, reseat all the boards in the desktop, reconnect everything up to the back panel, and got it running again with no problems.
What a relief to have a working computer.
