Hi, hope theres some motorcycle freaks out there, My motorcycle got kicked by car drivers in the parking lot now the 4th time and I have a full-damage now. Insurance won`t pay. Does anyone have suggestions or phantasy enough to tell my what I can do agains that. The car drivers just bump against it when they want to get into or out of the parking lot. i leave lots of space, I don`t park close to cars, but still - maybe Austrians can`t drive, dunno. May sound funny now, but I`m dreaming of something like an side-airbag for the m/c. I always use the main stand not the side stand, but to no effort, they still kick it. So if it gets kicked anyway, I want my new motorbike to get some protection, maybe selfmade. I found side protection, but it doesn`t protect the steering wheel (?). And this and the fork got broke. I`ll definately gonna buy me a heavier bike now. Maybe a mini camera wouldn`t be bad either, that records the lisence plates of the cars .  Because the ones that kick it of course don`t report it. Any ideas... BTW, there`s no garage near. Sandra

Hey, Sandra. I guess you have a U bend lock so that it can't be stolen? In any case, there must be motorcycle bays near you where you can park. Failing that, find the nearest bicycle bay and park it in the middle (steel bumpers on both sides then).
I haven't had a motorcycle in Vienna (and probably never will now) but I did in London, where the danger is far worse.

Hi Sam, Unfortunately the "renewed" the place where all the bikes parked, and took away ALL the bikers parkingbays, what a crap,..  (Who will vote for the "Motorbike party" if I found one  ) Steel bumpers, very good idea, but what can I do for the steering wheel (whats the english name for that on a bike???) The fork shows to the left due to the anty-theft lock, so when it falls the fork gets bent. Maybe I shoudn`t lock it that way, so the bike stands and falls straighter. Sandra

Sandra, Okay, I'm not a biker, so I have no personal experience in this. First, they are called 'handle bars' for the steering wheel.  Secondly, I would use the side kickstand. That puts the bike over on an angle, and it makes it harder to push off that angle. Of course, if they hit it from the other side, it's not going to help that much. Park it angled into your parking space, so that it isn't straight in. But, don't park it so far in that you'll get boxed in if the two idiot car drivers decide to park directly next to you. Get a 'Warlocks' or 'Hell's Angels' club badge for your biker...and pray you don't run into a Warlock or Hell's Angels. Get a sticker that says 'Stop Honking, I'm Reloading!' Get a Motorcycle alarm that goes off if the bike is touched. Finally, get a VERY big bat. Don't use your guitar, it's harder to replace.  Gary

It is meant to lock that way, Sandra - to make it harder to steal. I presume you also have a U lock to go through the wheel and the forks and lock it?
Crash bars on the side would be a good addition (and would also help to protect your legs in the event of an accident), kind of like 'roo' bars in Australia or cattle bumpers on a car in South Africa (or Texas?).
I don't know where you live in Vienna, in which district? Do you not have an 'Innenhof' in your building? If not, I suggest you find the nearest garage and flirt a little. Garages always have enough space for bikes that is rarely, if ever, used.
I always used the main stand too but sometimes, on a slope for example, it didn't hold and the bike fell over. Never caused much more trouble than some slight damage to the end of the handlebars. I don't mean to scare you but you may also be the victim of some kind of revenge / persecution attack, in which case I would call the police as soon as possible

LOL, good tips Gary. The alarm is a good idea. I won`t be able to hear it, but it might remind the car driver to stop the moment he touches it. I was thinking about the bat too, after finding out its a total damage (fixing cost higher than a new bike) A couple of weks ago I took a look into Google "street view". very interesting, and I saw that in the states, except maybe for the huge cities, you have a parking paradise. There are those parking areas in front of restaurants, shops etc. So you don`t have to park directly on the street. I wish we had that here. @ Sam: I live in the 16th. We have an Innenhof, but I can`t put my bike there, its not allowed. Sandra

*Try backing it inot the parking space, rather than head on parking the bike. This may better protect the locked front fork if the bike should be hit by a car from either side.
*Use of the kickstand instead of the center stand may well indeed protect the locked front fork a bit better, but nothing is ultimate protection against an idiot in an automobile or truck.
*See if you can find a good alarm system that will sound off loud, long and immediately should the bike be jostled or disturbed.
*If this is happening on campus, or otherwise at the workplace where you must park the bike daily, might be a good idea to have a talk with the local police about the problem. Good idea to have them alerted to the situation and on the lookout for such violations, I'll bet yours is not the only motorcycle suffering from such damage. If possible, take it to the police station, commander or whoever is in charge of the area. Have a short and friendly meeting with that person and discuss your concerns.

A bit (say about 800mm to a metre) of one of your old chains attached to a comfortable handle is good - does wonders for windscreens if you ever manage to spot the mongrel, and it will roll up into a nice flat shape that should fit in one of your jacket pockets. If he stops, you can rearrange his face with it too. I HATE people targeting us bikers - it's bad enough when they can't see you in traffic, to target you when they can see you is reprehensible and should be dealt with swiftly and assertively. An alarm that has a wav screaming something like "Help, help, some bastard's trying to steal me" at about 120 dBm on a 5 minute loop should attract attention and embarrass the culprit...

Do you suggest to park the bike with the front to the pavement or to the street?
I will definately add an alarm system to the new bike.
This is happening in my close enviroment!! So I know the bastard(s) must live somewhere in my street. I was investigating the cars near for lacquer traces, but to no effort.
@Ballan: they kick over everything, because motorbikes are second class to them. We have so many SUVs in our street, and I live at the edge of town, absolutely no need for it, and no posssiblity to use the advantages of a SUV. These cars are so high, they probablly don`t see the bike when they park out.

Sandra - if its any consolation, my last bike was back in England about 9 years ago (a Yamaha XV1000 Chopper) and it was stolen by joy riders off my own front yard. I did get it back, the following day. It had been totally destroyed and abandoned at the local bus depot. It was a complete write-off for insurance purposes and I was heartbroken. They had literally ripped it apart - but not before having had their fun with it, about 100km of fun, as could be testified by the speedometer mileage clock.

Parking in the states isn't always so good either. Down town Chicago parking permits are $150. for a small car: If it gets towed for no permit the charge is $350 + the charge for a sticker. That's for on street parking ; Private parking for downtown Chi' is around $800 a month.
Even the cars parked on the streets are damaged front and rear by people that dont drive to well.
As far as malicious people. I ran 2 golf courses located on Lake Shore drive. ( Nice, pricey and exclusive area ) . Hardly a summer past without a least one car parked on course that had been stolen, wrecked, stripped and burned out.
The advice about aggressive response to damage to your bike I would ignore. Call the Police! If you have a weapon it can easily get taken away and used on you. ( of course I didnt follow that advice myself. I carried a real nice dining room table leg or a half cue stick. )

As to why people do this, I have no answer for you. I don't know why people have no respect for other people's property.
When I drive, I am always cognizant of where the motorcycles are, because I like to give them as much room as possible. Over here, emphasized in drivers Education, and the just as promptly forgotten, is the 'Two Second Rule.' Count 'One One Thousand, Two One Thousand' and that should take you approximately two seconds. That should be the distance in time between you and the vehicle in front of you. We also use 'one car length for each 10mph', so if I'm doing 60mph, I should have six car lengths between the car in front of me, and my car.
WIth a motorcycle, I always try to double that, in case the driver drops the bike, I can stop in time before I hit him or her. What bothers me is that people will come screaming by you, pull in front of you, and then sit right on the bike's rear. I wish everyone would have to ride a motorcycle for six months so that they would know what it feels like with a car two meters behind you at 90km/h.

Do it the other way from the way you park it now.
I was thinking that perhaps turning the bike the other direction might make it harder for the automobile to break the fork lock.

Yes. Good thing. If you can find one that not only makes a lot of noise at the bike, but will alert you via a small radio device the moment the bike is disturbed, perhaps you can spot the culprit in the act.

A hidden camera is a good thing for catching miscreants who repeat their crime. The ability to show the playback to the police is a good thing.
One of my daughters once had a problem similar to this one. She solved it by dating a police officer...
