Hello,

Midi versions of songs come into BIAB as one track on the melody track, everything drums, bass, keys. Is there a way to get the parts separated to the Bass, Piano, Drums, Guitar etc tracks? I bet there is, I'm still poking around, thanks for any help you can give me.

Update: What I tried was to open the Midi file and then save the whole thing as a BIAB file *.MGU then I made a new BIAB file, then use the Import MGU Song, doing this separated the channels to the standard BIAB - Bass, Piano Drums etc and I could then apply RealTracks to the specific parts, but it didn't work that great, had problems with volume of the RealTracks being to low and also if there was pitch bends in the solos it would throw of the tempo. I'm not really sure how to do this, I did check out the manual about how the Sequencer button works on page 176 but couldn't find how to map the channels.

The Sequencer feature was designed to cope with that. Check out the manual and help file and press the green SEQ button.

After you load your midi file, under styles check style is enabled. Whatever instruments that the current style has will play. Each time you restart the song what the instruments play will change unless you place the track on the melody or soloist tracks. I am not sure about the 2009.5 version as I am still using 2008.5.

Not sure what you're trying to do here but keep in mind if you're trying to combine Biab generated tracks with some tracks from the midi file, you're far better off doing that in Real Band. Biab only gives you two user tracks to play with, the Melody and Soloist tracks while RB has 48. All other Biab instrument tracks will generate a new track based on the style whenever you hit play. You can take a track from the midi file and put it on the Soloist or Melody tracks, say a bass line, and then mute the Biab bass instrument track. If all you need from the midi file is one or two tracks great, otherwise RB is the way to go.

The BIAB big green SEQ button can also show you the MIDI channels in an imported MIDI file, let you solo them if necessary to find the Melody -- and Mute it. Or the Bass, Rhythm, etc.

I'm trying to figure out how to apply a RealTrack instrument to each part of this type of midi song file but all the midi data is clumped together on the Melody track so there is no way for me to go in and just isolate the Bass or Drums and affect just those instruments by applying a RealTrack to them. It makes sense now that I understand that only the Melody and Soloist are user writable so it is not possible to select the Drum data and send it to "Drums" in Instruments and Parts because BIAB uses those and they are locked out.

Thank you for your help, now I'm seeing it.

Warning: I am not an expert on this!

I had the same exact question a couple of weeks ago and Mac explained it pretty clearly to me. The BIAB drum, guitar, bass... parts are all controlled by the style. So if you were able to move all the parts around to the "BIAB" locations and then hit "PLAY" the parts would be re-generated to conform to the underlying style -- and poof! -- you would lose your midi parts.

If you hit the green SEQ button, it will show you all the tracks in the underlying midi file (SEQ shows the melody or soloist tracks). You can mute, solo, change those setting to your hearts content. There is probably some way to edit those midinotes, but I am not sure about that.
Edit: So you could mute the guitar part and then add in a real track guitar.

Now, One thing I haven't tried it yet is to load in a midi file, and then load in a style and press play and see what happens. Will I get get two drums, two basses, ... (if all that is on the original midi file)?

Kevin

RealTracks cannot be made to play the same notes as a MIDI file anyway.

To get more realistic sounding MIDI files, investigate the cost and use of a better MIDI synth/sampler for the MIDI output.

The Seq. button was designed for using Biab as a sequencer. Biab uses certain midi track #'s for the bass, piano etc . . . You can change the default Biab track #'s in the opt/pref/channels to suit your needs. Once you memorize those track #'s, importing a midi file into Biab and altering the midi files track#'s to suit the Biab track #'s becomes much easier. No need to export to do the track # dance.

You CAN do it all in Biab and then save as a new midi file.

Biab generates its own bass, piano etc... parts EVERYTIME you press the play button. You can mute a Biab part by r-click on the part, listed at the top.

You can edit ANY midi track by using the piano roll. Be sure to select the correct part and track #.

Thank you Mac, I will check out some midi synths.

Update SUCCESS! I opened a midi file and was able to get BIAB to write new midi data to the missing tracks and then assign either a midi instrument or RealTrack instrument to the newly generated track. I could also get a new drum track so I could use a RealTrack drummer.

Thank you guys for all your help!

Be sure to take a long hard look and listen to the Ketron SD2 Orchestral Wizard sold on this site.

Very good sounding and popular little box.
