I have some MP3+G Karaoke files I'd Like to work with, Using PowerTracks. I can Pre-Record the stereo karaoke MP3 file using PowerTracks. Then I want to layer the singer's voice on a seperate PowerTracks track. My Question is this: Is there a way I can display the the karaoke (type CDG) graphics file for the singer as we record the vocal track? Thanks, FlaMusician

Indeed there is, depending on which version of PTPA you have.
You can't do this from the CD though, although you can play the CD through PTPA.
First rip the track to your hard drive.
Next import the track into PTPA
Now play it once and you will get the lyrics automatically
Do it again with the record button on and you will get the lyrics and record to a .seq file. Bear in mind that if you try to do it again with the .seq file, you won't see the lyrics again - the music file and the lyrics file must have the same names. However, so long as you keep PTPA open, you can record as many takes as you like on different tracks
I've done this many times

Thank You for your reply, I have PTPA 12 Build 12. My test karaoke song has two files with identical names, only the suffixes are different: You Are My Sunshine.MP3 and You Are My Sunshine.CDG. I imported the MP3 file, and loaded it into track number 1, but so far, I have not been able to get PTPA to load the CDG (graphics) file. Please Help, Thanks FlaMusican

You are correct that there are 2 files with the same name but different extensions.
Rob has a point, it may be right. I am not at my DAW and have nothing to hand at the moment so I will have to make some suggestions:
1. Try opening the .cdg file and not the .mp3 2. Check you have the setting for 'Show Lyrics' turned ON
You are so close

I believe there are four or more ways that karaoke music is handled on the PC. Home entertainment systems use avi files to get the process done with a single computer file. The pro systems use cda plus cdg files, or mp3 plus cdg (zipped) files. In addition, there are a number of proprietary file formats that don't need to be discussed here. The simple text lyrics display, that PowerTracks shows with kar files and some midi files should not be confused with karaoke graphics. Karaoke graphics files are somewhat more sophisticated, sometimes showing animations or photographic images. Some programs, like WinAmp, utilize and application extension to permit the display of karaoke graphics while a song is playing. I tried to get PowerTracks to recognize a cdg file, but it will not do that. Perhaps some future version of PowerTracks will have this capability. In the meantime, I found a PowerTracks workaround, using two computers, and a multi channel audio input system. Thanks You for your input. FlaMusician

A-hem. I know what I'm talking about. I use CD+G files all the time. Here is my website. I have over 10,000 CD+G tacks here PTPA can handle these with no problem at all - RTFM

Find and download a program called Audiograbber, it will ripp SD+G files into the computer then find a free player like Karafun and that will work. I could have sworn i did it with PTPA before, so Sam if you know how, give us a detailed walk thru.

Alternatively, use the ACW and create your own trax...

Thanks for the website link Sam, You've got a great karaoke list. I have a 500 GB hard drive on my laptop, and I keep my karaoke files in MP3+G Zipped format (I unzipped the files before I tried to access them with PowerTracks 12). Robh suggested that it would be helpful if you could give us a detailed walk thru, and I guess I'm in agreement. You're at a level of useage with PowerTracks 12 that I have not yet attained. Thanks for your help, FlaMusician

Winzip and digital audio files of any kind, mp3, wav, wma, etc. has shown itself to be problematic.
Compression of audio files should be done using algorightms designed for compressing pcm digital audio properly. Monkey's Uncle, Ogg Vorbis, etc.

Give you a walk-thru, FlaM?
I don't see anything to walk through...
However, you do need to decompress your zipped files first. Brilliant though this software is, it doesn't seem to be able to handle zipped files.
If you are STILL stuck, get back to me or send me a PM
BTW, much though I may be a beta tester for PG software (God rest my soul), I am behind on PTPA. I only have version 11. Still, the same principle applies.
Mac? What are you on about? Most of the RTs are in wma / wav format (unless you have the Audiophile version, of course). RB can also ouptut and play mp3, so, I don't get it. You know more than anybody on the forum - what are you talking about?

What we mean by a walk thru is simple. You claim to run CD+G thru PTPA, but it does not open them other than as a wave file, and the lyrics do not show up in the Lyrics window, So the +G is useless.
You say use the ACW and make your own tracks, what is the use of that when you lose the advantage of the original Karaoke file, and you end up with nothing but a song file that has nothing more that approximately the same chords, but is in a sytle noway close to the original
For that matter just rip the song from the original CD and make a BiaB song from that, no need to use a CD+G. Or just buy the music in a chord book type them in and pick a sytle. I am not trying to be contentious, but you claimed that this worked, and what you have shown is that it does not work, any more than the old way with BIAB.

I'm not "on" about anything, just sharing something I learned the hard way long ago -- don't use Winzip to compress audio files.
