Using Band-in-a-Box for Windows Version 2008.5 (264)
Running XP Pro SP3 on a Quad Core system with 4GB RAM

I have set the Midi Driver Setup to the following:
Midi Input Driver: In:B USB MIDI Sport 2x2
Midi Output Driver: Out:B USB MIDI Sport 2x2
Synthesizer/Sound Card: Korg O1/W
Unchecked "Use VST/Dxi Synth"
GM2 Support: General Midi (GM2) Support
Driver Latency: 0
Time Resolution: 1
(Note, I've also tried setting the Midi Driver Setup to point to my Digidesign MBOX 2 but get the same results, which is I can't get my synth to talk Midi to BIB and have BIB play it back through my synth)

I've configured the combination settings for A00 on my Korg with the settings as per the "Get Patch/Drum Kit Info" instructions. However, I can't seem to get BIB to record MIDI from the Korg or to play back. What have I missed?

One thing I don't understand is that by configuring the A00 as per the instructions, how do I play any other midi combo or prog. to BIB? I know I can route the audio output to BIB but then I can't edit it? Can you help me understand how this is to work and what I'm doing wrong in my set up?

Thanks for your help.

Need to know about your Audio connections from the 01/W's Audio Output jacks to your soundcard's Line Input jacks.

If you have those connected, then the problem likely lies in your Soundcard's software control mixer/applet settings.

BIAB sends MIDI data to the synth, but audio gets returned on different cables from the synth back to the soundcard so you can hear it. You don't have to record the Audio from the synth until such time as you may wish to make a CD, mp3, wav file or the like of your BIAB song.

The midi 'out' on my korg is going to the "in" on the midisport 2x2. the out on the 2x2 is going to the midi "in" on the korg. The 2x2 is connected to my pc via usb cable. I have headphones connected to the headset jack on the Korg. The line input on the sound card is currently connected to my mic.

Chcek and see if you need to set your keyboard to "performance" mode. Check the internal midi settings on the keyboard set up. Some keyboards require certain midi set ups internally. Just a thought . . .

You will be able to hear the MIDI sounds via the headphones that way, but you won't have a way to hear the RealDrums or Realtracks, which would come through the soundcard's output. That is why you should connect the Korg's Line Outputs to the Soundcard's Line Inputs. Use of a small mixer can alleviate having to change connections to go from mic to keyboard.

Try switchng the MIDI In and Out around, too, somtimes that can be confusing and will stop the MIDI data cold.

Consult the manual for the Korg, you may have to put it into some sort of performance mode to get it to respond to the MIDI data coming in.

Yup, I concur with Mac. Often the midi out and in is setup backwards, and does not make sense at first. Switch them around. Second, an entry level $50 or $60 buck mixer like a Behringer 4 channel with ins and outs and earphone to mix the Realtracks (audio) and the outputs from the synth is a good investment. It also helps in recording. I always have a mixer beside the keyboard, and put up memos, sometimes I like the sounds from the keyboard direct, and other times I route it through the Dxi or Ketron.

Keep plugging, (an unplugging) and keep notes!

I've even met some certain keyboards and synths where the MIDI IN connect was really the MIDI Out connect. Maybe they thought people wouldn't get so confused with the "Input goes to Output" situation, but that one really shouldn't exist and really creates more confusion IMO. I've encountered some MIDI interfaces where the cord ends are marked that way also.

At any rate, if I've hooked up and get no sound when I know the MIDI data is being sent to the device and am monitoring the device's output directly such as the headphone jack being used here, I will try switching those MIDI connects around just to see. It can and has solved the problem before and reversing them can cause no physical electrical damage at all. MIDI is optically isolated behind every jack by design. Eliminates the Ground Loop possibility entirely.

Thanks for the great input. Being a novice with this mixing stuff, is there a website you can point me to that will help me understand how to set up a basic system to include keyboard, mic, mixer, pc, etc. I know it can't be too difficult but I'm having a hard time conceptualizing the routing of midi, audio, into and from the pc. Again, thanks for all the "input".

Sounds like you don't have the OW setup, setup correctly, but as far as the in to out and out to in, I have confidence you accomplished that part correctly to hook up the PC/OW. However, I'm not that knowledgable about that particular Korg Synth, altho I new many pros that swore by this highly popular sound approach. Hope you have the owners manual with it, and a midi implementation outline!

But there is virtually nothing archived that I could find on the internet on the old OW, altho I just spent 30 minutes sniffing around for you.

Depends on what they recommend for GM2 setup/channel selection, etc. It's probably a simple setting you goofed up. Be interested about your previous use of the keyboard, especially if you successfully communicated with any other hardware/modules!?

If the keyboard midi setup and transmission is as it should be, it's most likely a setting in your BIAB midi setup page, or...possibly a setting that is wrong in the OW...of course, recheck the assignments/midi channel that's selected on the OW.

I still have an M1 two M3R's and a P-80 Arranger Workstation....but not the OW.

Here's some info from the midi manufacturers association:http://www.midi.org/techspecs/midimessages.php

Yamaha...Motif ES-8, Motif Rack, CS6X
Korg...Karma,Triton Classic, PA-80, M-1+

I've checked the midi in/out connections and they are correct as I can record to protools, but as well, I can't hear the playback. I'll look over the great advice here and see what I may have missed.

I got things set up so BIB will play back through my synth. I needed to connect my 1L and 2 R line outs from my synth to the line ins of my MBox. Next question.

I've configured my Korg according to the "Get Patch/Drum Kit Info". This configures Combi A00 to be compatible with BIB. If this is the case, then how do I play other synth combi in BIB. In-other-words, what if I wanted to record the sounds from combi A78? Do I have to do that only through audio? If not, what is it in the configuration that I need to follow to record/playback any combi in BIB?

Here is how BIB says I need to config. my Korg for A00:

Code:
O1W.DK help file.
Loading in the file O1W.DK will set up Band-in-a-Box for the Korg O1\W
synthesizer. It will set up :
1. Drum #'s for Korg 01/W (Patch 9 )
2. Patch Map (assigned to factory settings of Korg 01/W)
3. Startup Patches and Channels in Midi window.
If you have modified the Patches in your O1/W from the factory settings
you may have to modify the Patch Map in BB (from the MIDI pull down menu).

The only remaining step for you is to setup the Korg O1\W in Multi-Timbral
mode to receive multiple instruments at once. In "Program mode" the O1W
will only play 1 instrument at a time. In Combination mode it will play
up to 8 at once- so you want to be in combination mode and setup a
combination.

To Setup the O1/W, from the front panel:
1. Go to Combination Mode "COMBI". Select combo #0 by pressing 00 on the
# pad.
2. Then press the EDIT COMBO button to EDIT The Combination
3. You will then be using the PAGE + and PAGE - keys to PAGE
through the Combination setting up each of the 8 instruments
each of the A-H keys represents a different instrument.

Setup your Combination as follows:

A B C D E F G H
Bass Piano Drums Guitar Horns Strings Melody Thru
Page 0 Combination type MULTI
Page 1 Program # B06 B01 A09 B04 B22 B07 B04 B04
Page 2 Channel 2 3 10 7 8 6 4 5
Page 3 Key Window Type ALL= C-1/ G9
Page 4 Output 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90
Page 5 Transpose 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Page 6 Pan Pot 5:5 is in the middle - can separate as you like
Page 7 Enable Prg All should be Enabled
Page 8 Effect 1= "4:Room" :ON
0.7 D022 E76 HD10 L:0 H:0 80:20
Effect 2 = "19:Chorus 1 ":ON
M60 S0.30 D010 TRI L:0 H:0 86:14

Then Go to PAGE 9 and SAVE the Combination by pressing the 'G' key twice.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU SET THE 'GLOBAL CHANNEL' ON THE O1\W TO AN UNUSED
CHANNEL - EG. CHANNEL 1 . DO THIS FROM THE 'GLOBAL' BUTTON THEN KEY #5.
OTHERWISE A PATCH CHANGE SENT ON THE GLOBAL CHANNEL WILL CHANGE THE
COMBINATION FROM THE "BAND-IN-A-BOX COMBO" TO A DIFFERENT COMBO!!!

Once you have done this , Band-in-a-Box is ready to Play your O1\W
just by you selecting COMBO 0 from the O1\W panel ( as long as you
have loaded in the O1\W.DK file into BB and then saved it as MYSETUP.DK)

YOU WILL NOW BE READY TO GO WITH Band-in-a-Box AND THE O1\W !
