Windows 7 had a bout of Windows 7 Update itself being corrupted by a previous KB (aka knowledge base) update! I forget which ones (you can Google and uncover it) - I was bit twice once about two months ago, fist link seemed to fix it, then again in last few weeks and I had to do a little more drastic fix (last link)

you really want to download his .cmd files do not try typing that stuff in a DOS Command line yourself
