More cowbell? Mac - we're on the same wavelength. I love ALL fishing but fly is my favourite Alan - I envy you, Man! Its my 50th birthday on Thursday. Can't think of anything I would enjoy more! Still, my family are coming... My Mother arrives tomorrow - classic Viennese tea followed later by a lobster dinner specially prepared at my favourite restaurant in town (it is actually my girlfriend / sponsor's birthday too). On Thursday, my brother and sister-in-law arrive and I will meet them at the airport in a black stretch limo complete with dark-suited and sunglassed chauffeur and a bottle of champagne! I am not supposed to know that any of them are coming so it will be a double-blindside surprise for them as well. Then we are having a wonderful Asian dinner for 8 at a fancy restaurant in the city. On Friday, my brother and sister-in-law go back to England again and I am entertaining musically at my local street festival (DJ and Karaoke) in the afternoon. In the evening, there will be a great jam in the street!

I've never gone fishing for flys. What do you use for bait. If you want to talk serious beer drinking, I mean fishing , that's fishing at night for smelt in the middle of the winter in a little tent set up on the river.

What do you use for bait?? Everyone knows what attracts flies..
Ahh, smelt fishing, another clue on Silvertones location. All around the great lakes waterways it is a past time that starts in the fall. Upper east coast is more toward winter. What makes this different than fly fishing? No bait and more beer needed!

Sam,
I'm told it's a brown trout. However, the spots don't look big enough to me. What looks poisonous about it?

Well, I guess those rings on the body are shadows from the net but it looks bottle-nosed? I know brownies - catch them all the time in England, on the fly

Nice, Scott! Wish I was there to enjoy the fun. It is a brown trout. You know that already, being a Michigander - plenty in the Au Sable and Rifle. Although they look a little thinner out there ... must be less bugs to feed on! <grin> Sample Au Sable brown for comparison -(found with quick search) I remember as a kid finding Browns stranded in small pools after heavy rains along the Au Sable River

Oh there are bigger browns in this river - but they are too smart for your beginner fisherman.
The other thing that's nice about fly fishing in CO - almost no trees overhanging the river to get snagged in for the novice casting technique!

That looks like good eatin', Rharv.
Bread crumbs, a sprinklin' o' sliced almonds, in the pan with the butter, crack a good bottle of pink or white...
I used to rattle a grey or brown "fuzzball" down tree trunks and onto the water surface rather noisily.
Often found a large 'un relating to the tree cover and awaiting an errant mouse or chipmunk to fall into the water like that.
This trick works with fly rod or when lure casting, as well. Works on big trout or bass, too.
Plack-Rattle-Plop!
BAM!
Have Fun,
--Mac

Must need a new forum about fishin'. Talk about hi-jack. Reminds me to video tape a thing for the kids about fishing exploits when I was North of Superior, or north of Noranda. It's dawn and I should be out with the bow getting a deer but I need to scrape the windshield, and the sun is really red between the clouds in the east so I'll just polish my horns.
On second thought how about the sturgeon we caught at the mill pond just near the Smooth Rock Falls paper mill. Had to put the tailgate down on my f100 so it would fit in the back. Took 3 hours to get it to the boat then you shoot it with a 22 rifle. I once saw about 10,000 of them south of Val D'or at a dam, the Indians were spearing them.

I love this new forum rule . . . Man Must Fish!
Kidding aside, me and the wife just returned form our little camp at Delacroix Island. We fished between the thunder storms for the last few days and had a great time. If I can remember how to post a photo I'll show you a sample of the Red's and Specks we caught.
Later,

Just to be clear, that's not me with that fish, but they are commonly that size along the Au Sable. It is a top rated stream, one of the few in Michigan. I believe its one of the top 5 in US for natural streams. Much of it's length is thru national forest, of which Michigan has plenty.
The browns from the big lakes are a much different fish - bigger by far and most often caught on worms! Sam, if that looks big to you, I'll have to find a lake lunker picture for you. The Great Lakes are huge, many people have no idea just how large they are.

Our smelt fishing is on the incoming tides up in the rivers were the water is actually brackish. Salt water smelts. I never got used to the taste of fresh water or warm sea water fish. I'm from Maine. Now living in NC. The cold water species are what I like. Lobsta', clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops, cod, haddock. God I'm dying for some of that.

I used to blow up beaver dams as part of working for American Can, now James River Paper. Used 3 sticks. Had to stop them from washing out the road. You could always buy some nice trout from me. A buck or two each. i Lots of Americans came up and camped on our 400 miles of private roads. I was the Fire Marshal and in charge of explosives. On weekends I'd pretend I though Michigan was in Europe and sell them fish and take pictures of them. Hilarious. Played the northern hillbilly type. Now that I'm old I often wish I'd stayed there. I could get them to leave and go elsewhere by telling tall tales of bessie the mean bear who ripped tents for fun. She broke into campers too.
I liked funnin' them about 'merican beer. This would be in the early 70's. I'd spit it out and get them 'real' beer from my pickup truck painted red and and the cherry on top. Usually Brasd'or. 7 percent. Get 'em good and drunk.
Oh well, just back from Brass Band practice and lost the high A 1/2 way through. Better get back at scales and breathing.....tomorrow.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
