Hi all
I just converted to Windows 10 & my question is, with all the security measures that come with Windows 10, do I still need to pay for other security programs? I have been buying Avast every year for the last few years after using the free version. Windows 10 apparently shuts down their own security if you are using another one.

All I can report is that I've been using Windows Defender on four PCs for a year with no difficulties. I also use Malwarebytes Pro and manually scan with Malwarebytes regularly to remove the occasional threat that gets through.

All I can report is that I've been using Windows Defender on four PCs for a year with no difficulties. I also use Malwarebytes Pro and manually scan with Malwarebytes regularly to remove the occasional threat that gets through.
The same here! I have Defender or it's predecessor Essentials running on 5 computers for about 5 years now with no problems. I have Malwarebytes Pro on three computers and the free version on the other two. Of course I do not go to potential problems sites like pirate or p-o-r-n sites. That may have a lot to do with my no virus/malware success! I hope that I didn't just jinx myself.
Life is short so make sure you spend as much time as possible on the Internet arguing with strangers.

You do NOT have to buy top notch A/V or firewall (on the other hand however somebody has to pay at some point) I agree with Matt and Mario on regular use of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - but YOU DO need to use it regularly don’t get lazy (pro or free one) https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/But not to disagree with Matt/Mario my reading of Windows 10 Defender is it's OK but in the middle of the pack and not my first choice for my Window 10 laptop and now desktop PC. I agree with Larry that reviews reveal Windows' own protection is not the highest rated. I guess I would just say that for me, it's "good enough".
Related: I read recently that Avast and AVG were merging, but I haven't heard anything further.

I should add that I have a router with a firewall and Windows firewall always running also. My Malwarebytes and Defender scan once a day. I also use cCleaner Pro on my Internet computer. This combination has worked for me thus far.
I agree with Larry that your behavior has a lot to do with a safe computer.

I've read that Windows Defender is so-so in the security department, especially lacking in prevention of threats that aren't in the database yet. Most AV apps treat suspected first-day malware by the way it acts on your computer. This is where I read Windows Defender does the worst job, so first day malware has a better chance of getting through. At least that's what I read in the magazines. This is the site my computer repair guy uses to evaluate malware. He says it's non-biased and targeted towards computer pros. https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-10/I use a highly rated add-on AV plus the paid version of Malwarebytes. $40/year is not much to pay IMHO, and the added security is worth it. I'm also pretty aware of phishing and never click a link in what might be or definitely is spam. I don't trust attachments with potentially suspect extensions from my friends without verification that they sent it and even then I scan it first. As far as I'm concerned, that proverbial ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure in the data department. But then I run a business on my computer. Insights and incites by Notes
