Hi All
I have Bina B Ultra Pak Plus on a 160Gig hard drive USB
It works fine on my two computers in the UK--1x XP, 1x Vista Home Premium
I am now at my holiday place in Florida where the desktop runs Vista Home Basic and have a problem
The program opens OK and plays my song BUT wont shut down using the red X at the top right
I get an error message which says--Cannot create file D:\PGMusic\programs\bb\BBToolbar8.INI Access is denied at : 00422986
The only way I can shut it down is to go into Task Manager
Any ideas anyone???????
Phil

OK
Its the UAC
If I open it as an administrator then I can shut it down OK
If I open it as a normal user I cant shut it down
I dont get this problem if I use the original CD I bought rather than the UltraPlusPak USB hard drive
That seems pretty poor--is the software on the USB hard drive older non Vista compatable stuff????

I suspect that your Florida computer hasn't given the external disk the necessary user rights. I run my home computer with UAC turned off all the time (on Vista Ultimate), anyway, but when I visited my dad in Florida, I took an external USB drive to upgrade some of his software. I remember having some rights issues (where it couldn't write to the drive and it couldn't access some folders that I knew were there). I just gave that computer's username full rights to the folder and all worked well. I suspect it might be because I created everything on the external drive under my computer computer's username.
So, when you turn UAC off or run as administrator, you then have full rights. My guess is that the program is trying to write a configuration file or some such, but can't because of rights.
Just a thought.

It is Vista being stupid. They tried to mimic a Unix type file permissions thing to protect the system. It can work fine on one computer and you have to change the rights on another. All Unix guys knew how to do this. At worst you just issued a #chmod 777 filename and bingo.
Not the software's fault. Call Mr. Gates.

I respectfully disagree, John. While Mr. Gates sure has a lot of room for improvements, it's the program's responsibility to anticipate such issues and act properly, such as creating warnings whenever the program does not have appropriate rights to function properly.

Hi Guys
Tx for all the suggestions
I did wonder if it was the fact that the computer here in Florida gave the BinaB USB drive a diff letter to the UK ones--D not E-- so I changed that but still the same
Dont think I know how to give rights to the USB drive so I'll google it to find out and see if thats sorts it out
It is different here as when I go to "my songs" that I've created on both the UK computers the song has a BinaB icon next to it whereas here its just an empty page symbol although it still opens
Time to brush up my computer skills
Tx
Phil

If you right click on the empty page symbol and Open with and then choose BIAB you should get the BIAB icon jazzman

Well it's a long time since I wrote Unix scripts. But the O/S would be flawed if it allowed software to become an administrator and go and grab the information from and external source and become admin. No way, ever. It might be possible using Vistas scripting to get there and report to the user that they don't have the right permissions but remember that the script would have to use VER or some other method of getting the O/S, the determine the version, then report back to the user that "Dear Pg Music Customer...
The following might affect your use of this software:
1. You are attempting to install 32 bit VSC on a 64 bit computer which is not allowed.
OR
2. You have some file permissions in the PG music folders which do not have the appropriate security levels set to be used by our software.
OR
3. You have files such as SCREAMATBILL.mgu that we found do not have permission to be loaded once Realband or Band in a Box is running and you should get the vista manual and determine how to change file permissions.
It all seems arcane but in the end someone with the problem and a registered product need only contact PGMusic through email or live help.
AND, you often cannot, but sometimes can, unplug a vista external hard drive and have it work on another system. I've had to go back, and beg vista on the old machine to 'unmount' or safely remove the device, and then travel back to the other system and plug it in. Not fun. Now I never unplug an external vista device without going to Computer, right clicking on the PGMusic drive, and the click Safely Remove and waiting for the reply before doing so. Note that in doing that you must close all folders and programs using the external device.
All that said some experience with Vista changes the way you did things in XP.

Hi Jazzman
On my UK computers all I had to do was plug the USB drive in and then go to the PGMusic folder in the USB drive and make the BinaB icon a shortcut on my desktop
It all worked OK
should I be doing something else??

If you had ever installed BIAB to the C: drive on your UK computers in the past, then the few things that need to write to the registry, Fonts, Plugins and VSC DXi, would have remained. Ready to play from outrigger drive.
But if the computer you are using now never had a BIAB install, then those three things would be missing and may well be part of the problem here. Answer is to install them to C drive from the usb drive.
