Hm, interesting choice. For my part I can't really complain about them switching up the typical format of who wins a Nobel Lit Prize! Will be interesting to see the reaction to this across the web (it's already pretty... active, to say the least).

It's only a matter of time until we see a rapper get one. Most of us here may hate the sound (for that matter I can't stand Dylan's voice either) but the best rappers are very lyrical and they do tell a story.

I grew up with Bob and we played countless house parties and keggers together in HS circa 57-59. I've tried to get in touch with him several times.

Nothing as exotic as Don, but I was asked to drive him around Cairns a few years back. I bottled out. Worried I would get lost. I love his lyrics, so I'm happy he got the award.

I taught Bob that long descending intro run by Luther Perkins on Johnny Cash' "Home Of The Blues".` We hung out at Sammy's Pizza in Hibbing, Minnesota. I'm two months older.

I am just so happy about this I am about to die! smile I LOVE Dylan. I think Jokerman is my favorite song of all time.

Don, that is one sweet connection.

Can't top that but I did hang out a lot once upon a time with one of Dylan's touring guitar players who was borrowing Allen Ginsberg's apartment for the summer. We wrote some tunes together and he helped me with some stuff. Real nice guy. He told me Dylan was one of the nicest, and most chill people he had ever met. But he said when Dylan went into the studio, everything had to be PERFECT on the mixing board with existing tracks for him to sing to or he would just turn around and walk out and say "Call me when you have it fixed." Because he didn't do re-takes. So he wanted everything to be right when he got there.

It was wild seeing scraps of Ginsberg's poetry in progress lying all around everywhere. That was a trip.

Nobel Laureate Bob can't sing for beans, but he sure wrote a lot of nice melodies using three chords and some great lyrics. My favorite: "Make You Feel My Love" as sung by Garth Brooks.

I've tried everything to penetrate Bob's cyber security and reconnect so as to help my friends (I've missed the canoe for myself) but Bob is better defended than Fort Knox.

Great effort Mr Dylan.
Prophetic lyrics abounded.

A big congratulations to Bob Dylan! - Admittedly I do think its a little odd that his prize category was in literature but it makes sense why. His lyrics have been very influential throughout music and other literature pieces.

Cheers,

When I saw that I was like.... WHAT?

In recent years the qualifications for who wins a Noble prize seem to be going down hill quickly.

Congrats to Bob Dylan! Well deserved! His writing probably had a greater impact on our culture than the previous 10 winners combined!

I wasn't a fan of Dylan, but we are all allowed our "epiphanies". Because I played very little mainstream music in my youth, I was turned off by his voice. I didn't realize to much later that tunes I grew to enjoy in my older years, and were big hits for other performers, were penned by Dylan. My granddaughter is a very prolific poetry and song writer and has written some pretty good stuff. She "gets" Dylan! She is only 13 years old but her capacity to recognize metaphor and innuendo is amazing. So now when I hear Dylan I make extra effort to listen past his voice. DennisD

His brother, David Zimmerman, is his Publicist but hasn't answered my emails. I think that Bob would trade some fame for a few moments of solitude free from autograph hounds and memorabilia collectors. That's what I intended to offer him.

Fame comes at a very dear price.

When we played at parties everyone would say: "Let Don have the guitar, Bob!"

His voice is too nasal for my taste. No one can dispute his poetry or lyric writing gift.
