Yes, any USB devices must be hooked up and recognized by the OS *before* starting up PT or BIAB.
I leave my main USB connect hooked up at all times and use the power switch on the keyboard itself to turn it on before starting up BB, RB or PT. Works fine that way and If I forget to turn the keyboard on first, I don't have to fool with connections "down on the box" -- just close down the host program, then turn on the keyboard and restart the host.
